Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter…And Spring

Chicagoist recommends taking refuge from the downright temperamental weather to take in a flick. If, like us, you’re already tired of those overblown summer blockbusters – even though it’s only May – a number of great films are still playing in the area. Check out the serene Buddhist fable Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter…And Spring at the Music Box or the sexually explicit horror-cum-road movie (if that description doesn’t intrigue you, we don’t know what will) Twentynine Palms at Facets. Or, for a nice blast from the past on Thursday night, go see Peter Bogdanovich’s only true masterpiece, The Last Picture Show, at 600 N. Michigan, or Robert Mitchum in the timeless and extraordinarily creepy The Night of the Hunter at Northwestern’s Block Films, both shown in beautiful 35mm prints.

I'm looking forward to seeing "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter ... and Spring" out in these Gotham parts. But first things first: New York smashed by tidal waves is too good to miss. If only I thought there was any chance that movie could be good; oh well.

Also at the Music Box, I see, is Guy Maddin's "Saddest Music in the World," a strange and offbeat bit of absurdist delight. Worth the trip, that one.

Just as a note, "Spring, Summer..." is also playing at the CineArts 6 in Evanston.

Saw this last night at the Music Box, and it was gorgeous. Incredibly funny and incredibly sad all at once, a combination for which I am a total sucker. It made me want to drop everything, shave my head, and go live on a raft in the middle of a lake.
