Marshall Field’s Sale

No, not the "Save 50% off all Linens" kind. Target Corp., parent of Marshall Field's, has reached an agreement to sell the Chicago retail institution to May Department Stores Co. for $3.24 billion. Field's will join a stable of retail chains that includes Lord & Taylor and Filene's.

The Marshall Field's Name will remain on the chain's 62 stores, but the name was close to vanishing -- had Federated Dept. Stores won the bidding war, it was expected to rebrand the stores with either the Bloomingdale's or Macy's name. While many have no particular fondness for the soon to vanish Bank One name, Chicagoist imagines Chicagoans would be a bit more upset to lose Marshall Field's.
