2004_06_porch_collapse.jpgOne year ago, at just past midnight in a three-flat in Lincoln Park people were partying on the porch. Then, without warning, the porch gave way and smashed through the porches below it, killing 13 people and injuring 57 others.

Since the accident, 4,000 porches have been inpected by the city and they have improved porch ordinances, but many people, including the families of the victims, believe that more needs to be done to prevent it from this from happening again.

Last night dozens of people gathered at the spot where the trajedy occurred to mark the one-year anniversary and to remember the young people who died there. 13 white crosses bearing the deceased's names were set on the ground in a memorial ceremony. A dozen wrongful death lawsuits have been filed against the city.
