Sticker Time

04-05stkr.gifIf you've got a car in Chicago, you know it's time to get a new sticker. At $75 each, they ain't cheap either. But $115, if you buy one late, is worse. And speaking of late, the deadline is Thursday, July 15. After that grace period (the real deadline is June 30), cops start ticketing you with hefty $50 fines. Urk.

And if you live in a crowded neighborhood, don't forget those neighborhood stickers either -- another $25. Reportedly some folks are trying to beat the system completely, by stealing them from other cars, although Chicagoist has taken plenty of stickers off windshields, and we've always voided them. How do the thieves manage it?

so then, here is the perfect time/place for me to ask:
i just moved here from ohio, have ohio plates (which i plan on renewing in ohio in september, which is also where the car is registered), and also live in a neighborhood which does not require a neighborhood sticker.

do i have to buy this sticker?
i have a friend also from ohio in the same neighborhood who has been living there since oct. and he's had no problems.

advice?

I'd have no problem with the stickers if they weren't so darn ugly. Just look this year year's artwork? Ugh!

Better than the dead football player floating over the city. What was that?!

On out-of-state plates -- I think you will be ok. I had MO plates for years and no city sticker, and never got a ticket. You only need the sticker if you are a resident of Chicago. The cops are hesitant to ticket out-of-state cars because the owner is not likely a resident. However, I have heard stories of cops ticketing out-of-state cars for lack of a sticker where the car is parked in the same place for weeks and weeks. This happened in Hyde Park -- where the cops probably got tired of year-round student residents parking without a sticker.

The city sticker is an irritating scam. My window was smashed to get my city sticker and then I was ticketed for not having one even though I had the temporary application for renewal posted on the window. After this happened I got so paranoid that in the winter I'd pick up snow off the ground and cover up the sticker so potential hoods couldn't see. Tip for anyone making a bid for mayor run on the platform of killing the city sticker and you'll do well.

I got a ticket on this Wednesday and a scond on Thursday while I was on the way to buy my city sticker. I don't why I got the second ticket. I am going to be an Republican and move out of chicago!!!

Hi Mayor Daily, you got to fix the ticketing system of City Chicago. People are angary about it. If you don't, you will not have another term.

I highly doubt that Daley gives two tosses about what people think of the sticker program. He's too busy fantasizing about how to shut down Wrigley Field (hehe).

I agree with everyone else here. The city sticker is a HUGE scam!
