Illinois Republicans have begun taking the whole Mike Ditka thing pretty seriously. Although a few other names for the vacant Republican US Senate nominee position have been bandied about, former Chicago Bears Coach Mike Ditka seems to be in the lead for the job.
Monday, Iron Mike told GOP leaders he was interested, and over the past few days Ditka has met with Republican State Chair Judy Baar Topinka, National Republican Senate Committee Chair, Sen. George Allen, and tonight State House Republican leader Tom Cross is supposed to endorse Ditka.
Chicagoist is starting to get a little dizzy.
Although we don't like to wear our political stripes on our sleeves (Chicagoist is a "Fair and Balanced" publication), we have already pointed out that Mike Ditka hasn't done much for Republicans (or voters for that matter) in the past, and he isn't even registered to vote at his home in Chicago. Not a good start for someone running for high office, huh?

10 critical questions concerning Mike Ditka's potential Senate run
Some of these are kind of interesting....
Q: Ryan got bounced over divorce records showing his wife accused him of taking her to sex clubs. Any dirt on Ditka?
A: He's got a long list of actions you wouldn't expect from a senator, but enough time has likely passed -- and enough apologies offered -- for voters to forgive. He was fined $20,000 for grabbing his crotch and yelling obscenities at fans. He was accused of nailing a female fan with a wad of gum in San Francisco after a loss. He was thrown out of a New Orleans casino after being accused of throwing a lit cigar at a pit boss.
If Ditka becomes our senator I'm moving!
And hasn't he been stopped for DUI a few times, as well?
>And hasn't he been stopped for DUI a few times, as well?
I think that means he's MORE qualified to run.

-you haven't learned much about politics in Chicago during your brief time here have you? I suggest "Boss" by Mike Royko.
If it happens, this is one Bears fan who is going to make sure Illinois is not made the laughingstock of the nation. If Ditka announces, my donation to Obama's campaign is in the mail immediately. Go Barack!
