Senate Shoo-in To Speak at Dem Convention

7-27-04-obama.jpgIt is now a fact: Barack Obama will be the next Senator from Illinois. The Illinois Republicans haven't managed to find a replacement for Jack Ryan, and so the Democratic National Party has plucked Obama to deliver tonight's keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in Boston.

Chicagoist has seen Obama speak before, and you can be sure that tonight's speech will be nothing less than a barnburner. Born in Hawaii, raised in Kansas and the child of a White American and a Black Kenyan, Obama has a speaking style that manages to smack of Midwestern William Jennings Bryan and a Southern tent revival at the same time. Even if you don't plan on voting for him, it's powerful stuff, and you just might want to vote for him afterwards.

Obama's speech begins at 8:45 pm Central Time on the news networks, C-SPAN, and PBS.

The fact that he's speaking tonight smack-dab in the middle of prime time speaks volumes. It seems like everyone is talking about him.

Maybe Jan Schakowsky will turn out to be prophetic. In the New Yorker bio about Obama published a few months ago, Schakowsky (the U.S. rep from my neck of the woods in Middle Evanston) was in a meeting with President Bush. According to the story, he saw her with a button reading OBAMA and immediately questioned her why she was wearing a button promoting the terrorist. She corrected him and asked, "Have you heard of him?" The President replied that he hadn't and all she said in passing was, "Don't worry. You will."

Is it too early to start thinking Hillary-Obama in 2012? *grin*

Hillary-Obama...now there's a ticket that would play well in Middle America. Forget the gender/racial issues, a ticket that liberal will, for better or worse, just not win a national election in this day and age. Heck, if the Repubs weren't in such a mess in Illinois right now I'd be willing to bet that Barack would've had a much harder time even getting out of the primary in the Senate race.

Ron Magers just said on WLS that they're going to try to carry the Obama speech tonight on channel 7 as well.

I only managed to see a part of the the Obama speech on local news coverage here in Boston and wish I could see more. From what I saw I'm *extremely* impressed with the man. You IL folk will have a pretty well-spoken and charismatic man on the Senate floor, and soon.

- oh, and if anyone finds an mp3 or a tv rip of tonight's speech(es) post a link in the comments!

answered my own request - found it through boston.com. click me (opens new window).
