The Tribune on Chicago Uncommon

Unitarian Campus Ministry, University of Chicago, Chicago Uncommon

Being one of our favorite photoblogs, Chicagoist was very interested in the article the Trib did recently on Dawn Mikulich and her website, Chicago Uncommon. We finally learned what camera she uses (6.3 megapixel Canon EOS 10D digital camera), what she carries it around in (a discreet Crumpler bag) and what her editing methods are (minor color/contrast adjustment before posting).

Photography is Dawn's hobby, not her job and not what she went to school for. When asked for advice on photography she says the key is just to get out there and take pictures.. and take a lot. This sounds like the same advice Jake gives. Dawn says that during one session she'll take about 500 photographs at maximum resolution (note to self, buy more memory cards).

Chicago Uncommon gets about one search every minute and Dawn shoots pictures based on the subjects that visitors to her site search for. So.... if we'd like her to shoot something that she hasn't already we should all join up and go do a search for it!

Dawn has about 1,000 photos of Chicago available for viewing and purchase on Chicago Uncommon. Also, her photography is still on exhibit at the J. Ira & Nicki Harris Family Hostel.
