Deadly Shooting at the State Capitol

IL State Capitol - Photo: www.isds.orgWhoa! This just in: An unarmed security guard was shot to death inside the Capitol building in Springfield this afternoon. Police are still searching for the shooter, who fled by car. At about 1:45 pm, the shooter came in the north entrance (an entrance with no metal detectors), shot the security guard, thew his gun in the trunk of his car, and then escaped. One shot was fired, the guard was hit in the chest and killed.

Governor Blagojevich wasn't in the Capitol at the time and legislature is not in session. Springfield police are investigating another shooting that occurred about an hour earlier at a military surplus store about 2 miles from the Capitol involving a man who matched the same description.

The shooter is described by witnesses as white and about 20 years old. The car is a silver or gray two-door.
