Bread Factory Closing, Thanks to Atkins

Butternut Bread; Image: Peapod.comChicagoist is famous among ten or eleven people for having a highly developed sense of smell. It's a gift, folks. We love when we catch a big facefull of the chocolate smell downtown, or when the salt on the ice in the wintertime makes parking lots smell like the ocean, but sadly, after today, one of our favorite location scents will be no more: the bread smell on Garfield. Yes, many a trip betwixt Hyde Park and Midway includes a "you guys smell bread?" discussion, but today is the last day to catch a delicious whiff of the Butternut Bread baking plant on Garfield and State.

The plant employed 129 people, though it once employed 300. Butternut Bread will still be available in Chicago, but it will be baked at one of the other six area factories. Many commercial bakeries are feeling the pinch because "consumption of grain-based foods has declined in recent years due to changing American lifestyles," according to a VP at Chicago Baking, the company that owns Butternut. Thanks for nothing, low-carb dipshits.

From now on, we're only eating concept breads that can be plugged in. (via Popgadget.)
