Wondering why you weren't approved for that new car loan? Could be because of something that's on your credit report. So check it out - starting today, everyone in Chicago can get free credit reports as part of the Fair and Accurate Transaction Act passed by Congress in 2003.
The law allows you to get one free credit report every year from each of the 3 major credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.
A credit report will show if you pay your bills on time, if you've ever been sued, if you've ever filed for bankruptcy, or if you've ever been arrested. And these are the reports that creditors, employers, landlorsd, and insurers use to make judgements about you, so it's always nice to know what they're seeing. Order your report at www.annualcreditreport.com or by calling 877.322.8228.

ok. first try - Equifax was asking me questions about a loan i got 12 years ago and something else from 7 years ago and I guess I didn't answer right because it wouldn't let me get my report.
second try - transunion's server is so slow. i have to quit and go get ready for work.
any one else have any luck?
oh. holy crap. i stuck with it and went through all their steps (they repeat!) and just now it said the website was temporarily unavailable and that i should come back in a few minutes!! and refill out the forms on their slow-ass server? I think i'll wait a few months til people aren't jamming the server.
I have always ordered mine free, anyway. Just claim that you were denied credit, and they will all waive the fee. I do this every year!
And, you don't have to go thru that process above, just go to each website...
Previously, you only got one free credit report through the individual websites. This will allow you to get a free report each year.
I just got two of mine, but haven't gone back to get the third one yet. I thought we were supposed to get our credit score for free as well, but the two I did wanted to charge extra for it!
The Sun-Times article recommended paying for the credit score from one of the three, so the implicit assumption was that it wasn't included.
I got bogged down in the TransUnion server this morning. I'll try again at 2am or something if I can remember.
Worked for me this morning...I stupidly didn't pay for a Credit score while doing it. I thought I could go back and get the cheapest one, but NO. Buy the score from TransUnion when you're getting your free report, it's only 6 bucks. If you don't it costs 30 later
Have you seen this before? It's a number guessing game: http://www.amblesideprimary.com/ambleweb/mentalmaths/guessthenumber.html. I guessed 84230, and it got it right! Pretty neat.
