We Luv Wicked 4ever

wicked from wickedthemusical.com

Ugh. We’re not here to pass judgment (so not true), but today’s announcement in the Tribune that the Oriental Theatre will be overrun for the next 200 years by the theatrical misfire that is Wicked places us on the horns of a real dilemma.

The Chicagoan in us is thrilled about the projected tourism boon (as much as $500 million, according to the Tribune) and potential long-term career opportunities for local performers, as well as the prospect that this may be the birth of a whole new Broadway right here in our very own downtown. Producer David Stone, who’s responsible for the deal with the Oriental, says if the venture is successful, it could be the first of many.

On the other hand, the theater lover in us wishes the honor could be bestowed upon a more worthy production, like, oh, just about anything that isn’t total crap, musically and dramatically speaking.

Regardless, the touring show is set to land here on April 29, so let the teenage fanbase hysteria commence.
