The egov link is good, but also check with your landlord or condo assoc. My condo assoc. has banned charcoal grills for any tenant. The rule was supposed to be based on city ordinance, but I can't prove or verify. Either way, odds are you're not going to get a ticket for charcoal grilling. However, if you've pissed off your neighbor, all bets are off. Great article and good tips, but I'm not sure the recommendations will be "palatable" for most wooden-porch residents. (Pun intended.)

This is from the city of chicago's web site: "The use of gas grills on wooden porches, decks and balconies in housing with 20 or more people is a fire hazard. Re: the wooden balcony/fire escape thing - I was told by my landlord that it was ok if the grill was gas, and also bolted down to said balcony/fire escape in the event that it blows over.

What's the deal on grilling on wooden fire escapes? When I moved here, the guy who showed us apartments said it's not legal in the city b/c it's a fire hazard, but I see grills all over, and I'm dying to throw a steak on my little Weber...
