Chicagoist's heart swells with pride and admiration this morning as the winners of the 2005 James Beard Foundation Awards were handed out last night, and taking home this year's prize for Best Chef in the Midwest is Chicago's Tony Mantuano, executive chef of Spiaggia.

It's about time Mantuano brings this coveted award to Spiaggia's One Mag Mile home. This year's nomination was his fourth, and he's long been one of the most acclaimed and celebrated chefs in the city. Nationally, he's just as well known. His Italian cuisine has long been a favorite of critics and guests alike, keeping the 20-year-old Spiaggia robust with business and an amazing menu selection.

Spiaggia is one of those upscale operations in Chicago that is a must for every resident, at least once. The food, referred as "spectacular" by Phil Vettel of the Trib, is worth every penny you'll pay, but it's the sumptuous setting of the restaurant that makes dining at Spiaggia an experience. With the main dining room's massive, second-story windows, guests are treated to a rich view of the Lake from the perspective of Oak Street and Michigan Avenue.

Now the Beard award just gives you one more excuse to get over there and drop some cash on one of the best meals you'll ever have. We promise!
