Red Streak is Free

2005_05_free_red_streak.jpg

Maybe this is the beginning of the end for the Red Streak. Chicagoist noticed this last week but we haven't heard anything anywhere about it... all over the city the Red Streak boxes now say that the paper is free. Maybe people just aren't noticing it, the boxes look the same for the most part, but we're not sure how this flew under the radar of like .. everyone.

And also, does it seem weird that the Red Eye still pays dudes to hand out their paper at El stops? They could just slap the same stickers on their boxes to give them out for free. Guess they're still pretending like they're not a free paper.... maybe just for the advertisers. For some reason advertisers think that if you pay for something you're more likely to read the advertising. Yeh, right.

Is the Red Eye free, too? I still hand the guy at my el stop a quarter for it when I get one, and he never objects. I've been doing that for so long (at least once or twice a week since it came out) that I never noticed if it went free. Hmmm....

Mike Miner (Reader) did a column related to this a couple weeks ago:
