Re-Viewed: Moby at Taste

Ending the concerts at Taste of Chicago this year was Moby. Chicagoist braved the thunderstorm watch and intermittent showers to go see this short, but sweet show on Monday.

Moby joked about the weather before starting "Raining Again". Well aware of his reputation for talking too much between songs, Moby continued the banter by saying that when performing where fried dough is sold that cover songs are called for and then let Darren Murphy take the lead to belt out Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell". Other covers during the evening were from The Doors and a great rendition of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" by replacement vocalist only identified as Renee. Renee was very brave to belt out Moby's music without the benefit of a rehearsal due to an illness by the regular female vocalist that tours with Moby.

Other songs by Moby included "Beautiful" from Hotel and "We Are All Made of Stars". Moby acknowledged his love and gratitude to the Chicago house music underground that has helped him be where he is today before starting both "Go" and "South Side". He was also true to his political self throughout the set bemoaning the policies of Dubya's administration even thought it was the 4th of July. The crowd seemed to agree with him, though.

The concert only lasted about an hour, but Chicagoist would like to extend our very own "Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!" to Moby for his eclectic love of music and for believing that his fans share that love.

I was thinking about riding my bike down, then the rain came and I wimped out and took a nap instead. If anyone has paid to see Moby, is he worth it?

I've paid to see him twice (once with Bowie) and he has always been great, but the last show at the Riviera was phenomenal. Definitely worth the $38 or whatever it was.
