The BJM/Dashboard leaks were far more irritating than "vague background noise." That's my only real fault with the event. I liked the fact that you could so easily sneak food in. A pal of mine got a bucket of chicken in on Saturday and a whole pizza in on Sunday! And everyone had flasks on them, ha ha.

The sound leaks were the worst I think last night. The KC/ LP thing and BJM/ Dashboard ones weren't as bad and Widespread Panic v. Spoon. I was all the way on the north side of the park and could still hear Widespread louder than Spoon. At least those other ones were like vague background noise... this was like they were literally competing for your attention. That was the only case of be really wanting to see one band and having it hindered by another's performance. I have to agree with Scott that, for what it was, it was a great event. I mean, thinking it was going to be "not-corporate" is as delusional as thinking that the Killers are not corporate.

I saw scalpers and laughed because they finally got screwed because tickets were still available. The organizers did not expect to make money on this Lollapalooza since they didn't really have much time to set it up and get the kinds of bands that ACL gets or have time to advertise the crap out of it. Totally agree on the sound leaks. Just need more space between the stages. Not cool having to listen to Liz Phair's off key singing while trying to watch the Kaiser Chiefs.

So there was no ticket scalping, tickets available on the day of, and it wasn't shoulder-to-shoulder crowded? I'm still trying to see the bad there. There were problems and things I'd like to see done differently like...well, maybe I should just finish my post...

Sorry to rain on the "succes" parade, but lollapalooza hardly seemed to be a great event. I mean, I wanted it to be cool and a perpetual Chicago gig, but the city is better than this. Sound leaks, limited food choices, and that ultra-corporate-feel thing aside, it just seemed tired. There were no scalpers to be seen, tickets were selling online right up to the show, and the crowd was pretty sparse for the amount of space. Not to mention the whole "everything's a palooza" gag has run short. I mean, I like short beer lines, short food lines, getting 20 feet from stage 20 minutes before the show, but that doesn't spell success for concert sales and vendors. I can't believe that the organizers walked away happy from this thing. Dud-a-palooza, it was. Next year: Intonation in Grant Park!
