I entered a slogan for 2016 Olympics, but I would like tis one to replace it. "2016 OLYMPICS~DIVERSIFIED CHICAGO HOSTING WORLD DIVERSITY" I feel this is best and warmest way to introduce the World to our great city where I was born and raised and still love. Being raised in Hyde Park back in the forties and fifties was a time when the neighborhood was probably one of the most diversified and might still be. Rich, middle class and poor alike mingled together with blindness to color, staus, creed or ethnicity.

Now I got your attention Mr Mayor! I inserted the wrong year in my slogan in the above posting. It should read "2016 OLYMPICS - CHICAGO DIVERSITY HOST TO WORLD DIVERSITY

My name is Ted Davis from Tugun, on Australia's Gold Coast and some of you may have seen my letter which I faxed to the Chicago Tribune the day after London won the 2012 Olympics, where I expressed my belief that Chicago should bid for the 2016 Olympics.

I would like to suggest a promotional slogan in support of a Chicago bid. My suggested slogan is:

CHICAGO FOR IT!
CHICAGO 2016.

Mayor Daley should be aware of my suggestion.

To whom it may concern,

I am a native Chicagoan, die hard Cubs fan from the southwest suburbs.

I also have been a full time employee of each Host Broadcaster ( SOBO - Sydney, ISB - Salt Lake City, AOB - Athens and presently TOBO - Torino ) of the Olympic games since Sydney. Since the Millenium games in Sydney I have gone on to the next Olympic city as the flame is extinguishing to plan the next 5 ring circus.

I have to say that I am proud of my hometown for finally stepping to the plate to show the world that Chicago is indeed a first class international city. I cannot think of a better city in the world to put on this party. Road Cycling on the Lake Shore, Flatwater Rowing at Saganashkee Slough, Mountain Bike at Swallow Cliff, Gymnastics at the Allstate Centre, Basketball at the United Centre, Weightlifting - Boxing - Wrestling - Fencing and the International Broadcast centre at McCormick Place, Beach Volleyball at Oak Street beach and Beauty Cameras showing the world one of the earths best kept secrets - Chicago in the summertime.

I hope this isn't one of the citys' empty attempts at drawing Chicago to the world stage. This is a great opportunity for urban renewel, forget about a permanent Swimming Venue, the USOC has used a temparary venue for the U.S. Championship before. Temporary facilities is what the IOC has been stressing for some time now. They don't want the Olympic ideal to fade because of the cost.

I was recently in Helsinki, Finland for the World Track and Field Championships with my brother who has ties to Olympic Broadcasting as well and is currently working in Bejiing. Several people of distinction in the Olympic world were curious about Chicago. There is interest abroad, seize the opportunity Chicago !

I hope Chicago follows through with its' enthusiasm. And if it does I would be the first one to jump off the Olympic broadcasting train at the next stop and help Chicago in any way I could secure this bid.

Chicago in the summertime - 16" softball, the bleachers at Wrigley and the most beautiful waterfront in the world - what else could one want in life.

Regards

Chicago 2016: I support the idea of Chicago making a bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. The city has just about all the buildings needed tho host all the events. the only 5 things the city would need to build are: olympic stadium, the olympic pool, the Volley ball stadium, the cycling track, and Olympic village. A small upgrade to the CTA and paint the steel poles that hold up the El train tracks and the stations. As of right now; Monday, September 26th 2005, most olympic websites have Chicago as the leader to win the bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games; if the city of Chicago so chooses to put in a bid. Good luck to Chi-town A.K.A. The Windy City.

Ian D-B have you ever even taken a ride on the green line? I take it to work at least 4 times a week. It runs fine, as a matter of fact a Mies Van Der Rough design has been incorporated into the 35th street station during the major green line rehab of 5 years ago.

I'm a little biased on this issue since I've helped with initial bid process for the Olympics since back in the early 90's (that was led by the visionary Mr. Akif Malik) and worked on various Olympic Games.

There are "issues" with any potential host city, but there are also tremendous positive benefits. Chicago would be the best possible U.S. Candidate.

No final decision has been made (see www.chicago2016.net), but I know that if Akif Malik is involved in the bid, all of the legitimate concerns people raise will be addressed with innovative solutions. It's an opportunity to make a great city and region even greater. Think positive :)

The issue isn't just who the money comes from. It's that I just don't like the idea of all the crap required for the olympics ruining the city. The stuff is ugly. We don't need a gigantic new stadium, we just got one. I don't see how we would get the olympics without a whole lot of new building. Some other city would offer it and get the bid. Houston maybe, or some other sunbelt city following Atlanta's lead. The olympics is right for that type of city, but not Chicago.

Ron Rappaport had it right today. You make a bid, but you promise little (if any) new stadium construction. LA did well with their 1984 games (a financial smash) because the LA Coliseum was already there.

Rappaport is correct as well in suggesting that 2016 will almost positively be in North America, if not the U.S. Indications are that NY won't be willing to cobble a bid together. As mentioned before, the Chicago area

Ian D-B, why do you think that the only public funds that will go to the Olympics would be municipal $$, not county, state or federal $$$? Judging by the private sector support for the Gay Games (which was a risk to the local corporations), I'm sure the private sector support for the Olympic Games would be terrific.

As I understand it, the evidence is far from clear that on net, the olympics tend to help cities. The billions of dollars of development are difficult to recoup in revenue.

As to the CTA, it's not clear to me why transportation to poor neighborhoods or communities further from the loop would need to be imporved for the olympics.

As to the suburbs, regardless of whether or not the city has an olympic stadium, people will still work downtown. The money will still come in.

I've been to montreal and seen their stadium. It's not doing a whole lot of good to them right now.

The poor will still get screwed, and the CTA will suck if you live on the green line, but tourists will have lots of new development, and suburbanites can feel like they live in an important city.

Dear Clueless (aka Ian D-B),

1. Per you, the CTA is the biggest problem facing the city. Of course, an event the size of the Olympics wouldn't require upgrades to the city transportation system? Wake up! The CTA as a whole would be completely modernized and doing so would be a contingency of the city being awarded the Games.

2. "The investment necessary for the Olympics doesn't help the people who live in the city." Huh? New Roads, Public Housing (Olympic Village), New Facilities for Universities, and Upgrades to your precious CTA. Benefits to city-dwellers like ourselves.

3. Suburbanites. I'll grant you the suburbs are boring, hence my city address, but do you hate the several hundred thousands of suburanites who work downtown who pump badly needed revenue into the city? Or the tourists/business travelers who spend billions here? The problems you say need fixing all require one thing. $$$. And since people are too lazy to do it themselves, and would rather sit on their butt waiting for the government to do it, you need these people to provide the revenue.

Chicago probably wouldn't need to build too much in order to accomodate the Olympics. As was pointed out in last week's post, Soldier Field is too small to serve as the Olympic Stadium, so a new one would need to be built, but that's about it. We'd pretty much have everything else between Soldier Field, U.S. Cellular, Wrigley, UIC Pavilion, Allstate Arena, United Center, the college facilities, McCormick Place, etc. I'm sure the city could find a way to reuse an Olympic Village development for public housing or college dorms, etc.

Additionally, as part of the preparation for an Olympics, the infrastructure would get an upgrade -- this would be an opportunity for the CTA to gain some extra funding that it needs. And some additional money towards the O'Hare upgrades...

Don't support it because there's no reason to build a bunch of crap that we don't need. There is no use for any of the stadiums and other facilities that would be necessary. The investment necessary for the olympics doesn't help the people who live in the city, it helps tourists and people like tourists -- suburbanites. The city has an enormous number of problems right now, the CTA being the biggest one. Maybe we should fix them before going on a spending binge for things nobody wants or needs.

I'm sure some perfectly nice people live in Aurora, but there's no reason that those of us who live in the city should pay for any more crap to make them happy when they visit.
