Why does Chicago always have to compare itself to NY? I've never been there, but it seems it may have an inferiority complex. Get over your pizza and hot dogs and get a life. Chicago is probably a nice little town, but come on, you guys are not New York! Grow up and stop being so jealous!

Hot dogs? I thought this was a blog about NYC dog walkers? Re.: what's an NYC hot dog? First off it needs to be prepared by someone with very dirty hands / hands that have not been washed in days and it has to be washed down with a $2.50 can of soda. Seriously though - I don't think it gets any better than a dog at Gray's Papaya, in New York City, on 72nd and broadway.

Well said Nomad,
this does come off as a bit pathetic and a lot of these posts are only giving smug new yorkers more ammo.

As a 10 yr. Chicagoan I have to say NY style pizza is the best no question but for Hot Dogs it's Chicago easily NYC can't even make a squawk about that, ketchup on hot dogs is discusting and as one poster mentioned it makes me think of a baby eating a cut up weiner with it's hands. It's also gross on cheeseburgers IMHO.

Sigh ... Frank's actually right in my opinion. I'm from nowhere ... military brat, so I lay no claim to the east coast or the midwest. I've lived in Chicago for eight years.

This whole Chicago vs. New York thing is usually started by Chicagoans and it always strikes me as sort of immature and sad. The second city moniker is deserved and will always be applied to Chicago simply because Chicagoans give a flying damn. If a Parisian said Paris is better than Amsterdam or Rome, etc., would the Amsterdammers or Romans give a shit? Of course not.

C'mon! Chicago's not New York. Never will be. Why do so many people here have a chip on their shoulder about it?

Do you like alleys that hide all the trash and electricity wires, and decent parking, and cheap big apartments, and a skyline you can see while still in the city, and an awe-inspiring river canyon unlike any other in the world, in a great city with the largest population of lifelong residents in the U.S., giving it that old-school hometown charm? Great! Chicago rocks! Do you like living in the largest city in the United States where everybody's on top of each other, forming a transient ever-changing mixture of cultures like no other place in the world, and so much is right outside your door and with the U.S.'s most impressive transit system and opportunites for artists, filmmakers, musicians and actors unlike anywhere else? Great! New York rocks!

Now shut up and eat your Chicago hot dog. I get mine with everything. They are the best indeed, but I still can't wait for my trip to New York this fall.

I have to add my two cents (when don't I) ... not enough south side on this list!

My favorite dogs are from
1) Pop's 127th & Harlem
2) The Cell, any Kosher along the first base line
3) Janson's 99th & Western (filmed Crime Story here ... remember that Dennis Farina fans?)

I never was a fan of the dirty water dog during my stint in the city, but often times it was the only thing I could afford for lunch... also, you can't beat the recession special at Gray's Papaya in terms of value.

In any case, I'll take a nice Vienna Beef any day.

I used to respect New Yorkers. Then I went to college on the East Coast, and I was shocked by the sheer number of unprovoked remarks made about my hometown by NYCers.

Fuck you, Frank. Don't like Chicagoans? Take your cooler-than-thou NYC attitude back to NoSoLoHoBecaSlopeburg or wherever it is you're from.

Clearly after eating half a dozen different dogs in both cities, we're all more than capable of being the authority on this issue. So let me just add:

NYC, Pro: they gave us the tasty foot-long kosher dog. Con: they also have vendors serving weenies soaked in nasty water all afternoon.

Chgo, Pro: encased meats truly taste best charbroiled and the array of toppings is impressive. Con: establishments like Weiner's Circle, Demon Dogs (RIP), and Byron's are overrated, trying to exploit the Chicago Dog reputation.

We've always had a knack for not proving points. Or is it not NOT proving points? Or shouldn't the negative be eliminated altogether if we are proving your point? Or are you just being sarcastic? Damn you and your East Coast highbrow ways, Frank!!

Hey, I'm a New Yorker, and I can tell you that Chicago style Dogs are the best. You can get a halfway decent one at the Shake Shack at 23rd and Madison Ave.

It don't compare to Herm's in Skokie, but it keeps me fed in between visits to Chicago.

Hey Frank,

Go back to your roach-infested, $2000/month one-room apartment and keep trying to convince yourself that misanthropy and arrogance are somehow synonymous with sophistication.

What is a Chicago-style pizza? You may argue that it's the deep dish pizza that a Texan, Ike Sewell foisted on us, but I argued it's the crispy thin-crust pizza that was popular long before Sewell and his chef Lou Malnati opened Pizzeria Uno in 1948.

Actually NYC hot dogs are quite good. All this posturing just makes Chicago seem more pathetic because we care about whose got the best hot dog. I guarantee that no one in NYC gives a shit about this.

NYC pizza is better too...but who cares? It's food.

I love this city but everyone here has this sad-little-brother-low-self-esteem-complex when it come to NYC.

Please shut up about this. You can be proud of who you are without comparing yourself to others.

According to the Sun-Times ...

A New York-style hot dog varies depending on who's making it but generally includes mustard and sauerkraut in a plain bun. Onions, relish and -- horror of horrors -- ketchup are typical add-ons.
