I had a similar experience with Vosges on Armitage Ave. They have got to be the most unfriendly, unwelcoming and snotty people on the planet. When I inquired about some of the more unique confections (like the curry) I was told that I probably didn't have the pallet for such an exotic melange of flavors. Excuse me! They then scoffed when I asked for a sample and was pushed heavily toward a $200 box of truffles which I didn't want. I was annoyed and vowed never to return.

Ethel's is owned by Mars and is far superior to both Hershey's and Vosges. The problem with Vosges is that they have no brand identity (they sell chocolates, yoga mats and dog sweaters) plus their "exotic" and expensive chocolates can leave a bad after-taste (black pearl salt, curry and chocolate. disgusting.) Ethel's has a few misses (most notably circus peanut) but their cocktail collection is very popular. Champagne being the most popular and Mojito an acquired taste but not as awful as Chicagoist says. Hershey's is crap.

the numbers in the post are the order in which we visited the chocolate shops, not a ranking order. i wouldn't rank hershey's above any of the other shops. they weren't really selling chocolate there, they were selling hershey's branded crap. i mean, you COULD get chocolate .. but.. they surely didnt compete at all with some of the other places we visited.
