Drinking Liberally

2006_04_dlbottle.gifTwo years ago, when it became apparent that the people of this nation would have to endure another four years with a criminally negligent dry drunk as President, and that a majority of voters actually wanted this, Chicagoist entertained thoughts of reclaiming our "A" game and consuming all the liquor we could in order to black out as much as possible through 2009. We didn't follow through, mainly because we hold to the old adage that alcohol and politics don't mix. There are some people who disagree, of course, and you can call each other names on your own time.

If you're pissed off at the blatant criminal intent of the GOP - and the ineptness of Democrats to actually capitalize on this - consider raising a glass and venting your frustrations at a meeting of one of the local Drinking Liberally chapters. Founded three years ago in New York by Justin Krebs and Matthew O'Neill, the mission of Drinking Liberally is to "(give) like-minded, left-leaning individuals a place to talk politics." Since its inception Drinking Liberally chapters have spread throughout the country, including two right here in the city. The first local Drinking Liberally chapter meets at the Red Lion Pub every Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. A more recent downtown chapter recently formed; they meet at Frankie Z's Clark Bar from 6:30-9 p.m. Tuesdays.

Just don't vote drunk in November. We feel that might have a lot to do with the Smirking Chimp still being in office.

How dare you call the president a "dry drunk"!

He's soused and you know it.

Kids, let this be a lesson to you: don't drink and blog.

Smirking chimp?

Why do you hate freedom?

This club should go a long way to counter the image of liberals as nothing bunch of a bunch of verbose do-nothings talking big ideas while sipping overpriced coffee or wine.

Sorry for the typos. Apparently I'm showed up early for the meeting.

The Red Lion?

I figured it was common knowledge by now that the owner isn't very fond at all of anyone who isn't white.

Then again, this group sounds like it will attract only the most insufferable individuals.

How miserable, yet entertaining it must be to observe this group in action. I'll definitely be at the next meeting to laugh at the whiny liberals.

...and the Law of Unintended Consequences reigns supreme.

However; as lame as anyone's discussion group may be, showing up to laugh at it is EVEN MORE LAME.

Maybe somebody should start a group called "Snorting Conservatively" so Steven and Jack will have a forum at which to laud the fantastic job the Bush-Cheney administration is doing, rather than worrying about those whose opinions differ from their own...

Where did you get the idea that I supported the administration? ...cause I don't.

I -do- think that the Red Lion is an odd choice to meet, considering the somewhat backwards opinions of its owner (seriously, engage him in discussion sometime. For extra fun, ask for a Budweiser.). I also think that such a group is liable to attract the insufferable, "nobody gets it but us" types.

Still, though, it doesn't get any more immature than "I'll definitely be at the next meeting to laugh at the whiny liberals."

Steven -

I misunderstood you then--my apologies...

When will libs learn that the Republicans, for 20-30 years, have been organizing like nuts on a grassroots level, and that is one big reason for their success.

Fuck the bar. Get out into the streets if you want to bring down these idiots, and prevent other god-fearing idiots from taking their place.

Thad, you just got yourself a spot on the Watch List.

Thad, will you come loofah my stretchmarks?

Nothing like elists sipping wine while talking about how they are "for the people." We've got a bunch of junior John Kerry's here.

Of course, when a bunch of actual elitists drink wine at their country club, this same blog is used to denounce that sort of activity as wrong, and proof of how the GOP is ruining the country.

A bold comment from an anonymous coward.

I don't recall the story implying this was an elitist "wine" club; what difference does it make what they may or may not be drinking? If like-minded individuals want to get together and discuss politics over a beer, or a jack & coke, or even a glass of wine, who cares?! I think they've purposely chosen bars because they're PUBLIC places that lend themselves to lively and open discussion, and for better or for worse, alcohol often and conveniently fuels that type of discussion...

When did this blog change from Chicagoist to Democratist ?

Depending on who you ask, it changes every week!

I distinctly remember commentors accusing Chicagoist of being Republican shills when they expressed mild approval for Topinka.

can't please everyone!
