Meeks Not Running for Governor

2006_05_jamesmeeks.jpgAfter much speculation, State Senator James Meeks announced today that he will not run for governor as a third-party candidate this fall.

Meeks was considering a run because he was disappointed with Governor Blagojevich's school funding, but after being briefed on Blago's new unreleased plan, the Reverend said, "I'm saying I'm off the ballot. Forget it."

This is quite a change of heart as just last week Meeks announced he would begin collecting the 25,000 signatures needed to get on the ballot and planned on announcing a slate of candidates for offices statewide. We're sure Meeks' withdrawal from the race disappoints homophobic pro-lifers around the state, and that Blago and Topinka are looking forward to a straightforward mano a mano fight to the finish.

I'm sure it REALLY disappoints Topinka, since Meeks would have done a nice job of splitting up various factions of the Democratic base as well.

Not necessarily. Meeks would also have appealed to those on the fringe right who don't think Judy's Judy's godly enough. You know, the one million of them who voted for Alan Keyes in 2K4? A number that still confounds me. There's more of them out there. If Meeks wasn't solely interested in making the Governor cave in to a power play the children, he could be a serious third-party candidate.

i was actually excited about meeks running. i'd rather that the religious extremists create their own third party and leave the GOP alone.

Good, Meeks would be noted as a double agent for the GOP.

Meeks not running? THANK THE LORD!!!!

Heard he's not running cause he was the minister caught in the closet in the R. Kelly
