Family of Girl in Coma Contemplates Legal Action

chicagoist_2006_09_tooth.gifBy now you've surely heard the terrible story about Diamond Brownridge, the 5-year-old Chicago girl left in a coma after being sedated during a dental procedure. She has been in a coma since Saturday, and despite some reports we had heard on TV, her family has no intention of taking her off life support yet. CBS 2 did report today, however, that her parents began taking the necessary legal steps to determine if the case is eligible for a malpractice suit.

Whether the family eventually wins any kind of judgment seems like it would be little consolation to us, as it would never bring her back. They may be holding out hope for a recovery, but we know this isn't going to end well. As for the dentist, Dr. Hicham Riba, he seems resorted to the fact that his life is ruined as well. He's already received death threats, his practice here is probably finished, and he'll forever have this incident on his conscience.

We'll be interested to see the details of this tragedy unfold, if only out of a morbid sense of needing to understand how it happened. But we can't imagine any explanation being all that satisfactory.

Maybe they should give the girl Ambien;

I think the media has played this one too much. It's sad and tragic for all involved. So is the shooting death of my neighbor on Monday night that didn't even rate a mention.

No knowing what the shooting death was about, there was more of a message to this than just a little girl going into a coma. The mother was told to leave the room while the little girl was given three sedatives, an amount professionals have said was too much. The mother said on Fox news in the morning that this her message to all parents was to never leave your child's side at a doctor's office, no matter what the dentist or doctor says.

Where did the shooting occur?

If we had any good ideas on how to stop shootings from happening and they weren't being implemented, that would be equally as newsworthy.

The fact of the matter is, based on reports, the child was given a gross overdose of sedatives, and then was not monitored- which is the most basic standard of care, because even patients who receive appropriate doses of sedation can have the reaction this little girl did, and the only way to know is thru monitoring. This tragedy was 100% preventable, and perhaps the publicity surrounding the event will prevent it from happening to another child. THAT makes it newsworthy.

I guess they can add wrongful death to their legal action contemplation.

She died

nitrous oxide, an IV, as well as tablet-based oral sedatives? jiminiey crickets. that would put a full grown man in a coma, let alone a 5 year old.

The shooting was in an alley on the 1900 block of Cullerton. I wonder if the family of the shooting victim would have liked an opportunity to plea for witnesses to come forward?
