As I'm sure you know, Joe, The Great Society programs helped establish Housing for Urban Development, which was involved with CHA and Chicago housing projects. Above, I contrast the state of the RTH with the original efforts in the mid to late 1960s.

I remember driving up north into the city as a kid and seeing them along the road. I also remember my dad telling me a story about how he helped someone he worked with (back when my dad had a pretty bad job) move into one of the Robert Taylor homes in the early 70's when the two flat he rented (I'm assuming with something like a Section 8 voucher) burnt down , and reported that after he helped this man finish moving, this rather stoic and tough looking guy burst into tears at the prospect of having to live there with his family. I never forgot that.
