Haven't been to Tecalitlan in a while, but El Taco Veloz wins based on their 'huaraches' alone. Haven't tried a huarache ?

It's a huge pile of the usual ingredients on a toasted corn meal pancake. I prefer mine El Pastor.

I doubt that Tecalitlan even offers them.

It's Tecalitlan. Seriously. The best salsa in all of Chicago.

I am Tecalitlan's biggest fan. Literally, because I ate so many of their burritos! But seriously, folks...

How can you debate the merits of a Mexican restaurant and not discuss the salsa?

i have only been to tecalitan, but am definitely going to try el taco veloz next time i get the hankering for some good food within walking distance.

i totally agree on the way too much factor at tecalitan. i always order the veggie tostadas and there is enough rice to feed a small family.

Tankboy - that is so true. I (originally a Northern Californian) once lived with a texan and a southern californian. Things would get very tense very fast when the topic of how to make quacamole came up, as we each liked is best from where we were from.

To each their own. I grew up in south Texas, eight miles from the Mexican border, and Tecalitlan serves food that really reminds me of living down there. Mexican food is a wonderfully varied canvas, though, so I think there's room for everyone's personal favorites!

Tecalitlan can't be beat as a great place to gather with a large group of friends at one of the huge tables and get hammered on magaritas but the food? Eh, passable.

There are tons of little, cheaper taquerias with better food around the city. Hell the grocery store taqueria by my work has better tacos. If the place across the street is the one I think it is then yes the food there is better.

I'm with tankboy in favoring Tecalitlan, especially after sampling several items from both menus. Pollo mole at Tecalitlan is one of my favorite dishes of any resturant in Chicago.

Both joints are swell, but Tecalitlan is my favorite Mexican joint in the state of Illinois!
