It's Not Easy Being

Green_01_05_07.jpgWow, what a great response we had to yesterday’s request for classic novels for this month’s Convince Us.

We actually love the classics, and have read and enjoyed many of these suggestions. The book that we’re going to pick is The Quiet American by Graham Greene. We’ve almost picked up his books a million times and ended walking away with something else, so now’s his chance. The selection seems timely and was seconded in the comments section, and that's enough for us.

Please feel free to read along, we’ll post our review at the end of the month. And thank you for giving us the assurance that people still love the classics.

As the dude who suggested The Quiet American yesterday, I'd just like to say excellent choice. It's the best thing I've read in years.

I'm excited to read it, completely looking forward to it.

I'm never sure whether I should call out the commenter who suggested the book, I never know if they want to be called out or not.

Either way, thanks!

This has been one of my all-time Top Ten since I read it aeons ago (I'm an old, old man) the first of many times. Present-day readers may be less familiar with the military/political context of the day, but if you have a pulse, it simply won't matter: read purely as a love story, The Quiet American will break your heart. I'm thrilled at the choice and kudos to The Decider -- of the book, that is, not the other one... you know...

I hope I was the one that seconded this book! I love Greene, and like Hemmingway find his work to both moving and introspective. I am looking forward to your review!

I love Greene too. Thezenarcher, I think that even if readers aren't as familiar with political/military context, it will be just as relevant today as it probably was then.
