> 22nd Ward Alderman Ricardo Munoz is on board with this as well.

Munoz is a sucker for a joint press release with Moore.

Calls for a house cleaning at City Hall come from within

Joe is like Ricky's older brother.

"Come on, it'll be FUN!"

Garry, you're suggesting reconfiguring the tracks? That's what costs so damn much at Fullerton and Belmont. But nice try at actual engineering work. Most people need to get degrees.

I can't argue with what you're saying, Garry. The whole Authority seems to be fubared right now and can't get a grip on anything. All I'm saying is that I'll take this messed up period over two or three years of straight-up closure.

Hopefully you'll be proven wrong on the whole loss of life issue, but I think the possibility is on everyone's mind as the "incompetence spiral" continues apace.

OK Cletus, you claim you're not a CTA apologist, but those running the CTA are complete idiots!
They just spent millions & took about 2 years to rebuild the 35th & Dan Ryan L station, IN THE SAME PLACE!
Totally ignoring that Sox Park has been moved to the south side of 35th St.
Just how stupid are these people?
I'll bet that the rebuilt Sedgwick station will have 2 side platforms instead of a single island platform.
This, even though there is plenty of room for an island by rebuilding the currently abandoned tracks 1 & 4 and using them around a new Sedgwick platform.
CTA management, planners, engineers & operating personnel are totally incompetent!
Actually, everyone there is an idiot!
And we pay for it, in dollars, time lost & soon, lives lost in some stupid, avoidable incident that will cause some people to die.

Back in the day in the RP, rumors were flying fast and furious that Moore was going to go down in The Silver Shovel investigation. Either those rumors were unfounded (always a possibility), he managed to wriggle free from any charges, or perhaps he rolled on somebody else to get his ass out of the proverbial sling.

Read this article & these are some quotes from it Moore took a bribe!
http://www.pioneerlocal.com/newsstar/news/186843,SN-liquorstore-1227060s1.article
"They were even more astounded to learn that a
long-standing moratorium on the issuance of new liquor licenses for a two-block stretch of Clark Street between Pratt Boulevard and Wallen Avenue had been lifted by Ald. Joe Moore, 49th, last February."
"Odeh contributed $1,000 to Moore's campaign fund according to the alderman's campaign disclosure statements filed at the Cook County Clerk's office. Moore has since said the contribution had nothing to do with his decision to lift the moratorium."

Wow, this is a complex thread.

First off, I lived in Moore's ward for 12 years, a couple of which I was heavily involved in the pilot program of CAPS and some other community groups, and had occasion to interact with him several times. To lift a line from Matewan, "I wouldn't piss on him if his heart were on fire."

BHOP- just reading the name Devcorp makes me cringe and the 24th District CAPS umbrella group was so annoying and political back in 1994 that I shudder to think what they must be like now. Sheesh, I'm cringing and shuddering, just thinking about the 49th. Not that there weren't (and still are no doubt) some dedicated and righteous folks trying to stem the forces of Moore's "government by entropy" program.

Moore's constituents face an hour's ride to/from Howard from/to the downtown (if they can't catch the Evanston Express) under the best of circumstances. I know I'd be screaming on the phone to his office just to work out some of my anger at the prospect of that time being doubled (or even thirded, for that matter).

NSH- I've spent of lot of time down on the southeast side recently and your post about CTA/Metra issues in that area was very illuminating and explains a lot.

Finally, while I'm on this interminable soapbox here: I'm not trying to be a CTA apologist, because they are bollixing this up something fierce and have the worst PR since...I can't even find a pithy simile; BUT they are rebuilding an entire rail line from the ground up while it is still in operation. This is a pretty complex task, especially if you're going to care whether or not workers are going to be injured or killed (this isn't the digging of the Illinois and Michigan canal here). As much as I get livid with the delays and stupid crap, it's better than having them just shut down the whole thing for a couple years and face the prospect of getting a car again or facing shuttle bus hell all the time.

Kevin,
Kevin,

I feel your post is totally out of line. The Alderman is doing his job.

Rogers Park, situated on the far north side of the city has several Red line stops, and the Howard Station located in the ward is one of the busiest in the CTA system. Don't you think that when the CTA announces impending delays it's up to the Alderman who represent the wards most affected by those delays to ask serious questions about the planning and implementation of those delays? Isn't that what Alderman are supposed to do?

The only people treading water in the 49th are the lame o opponents lined up against Joe, and angry people like Broken Heart who post picture of poo on their website.

> Moore says residents in his transit-reliant ward are calling his office on nearly a daily basis complaining about the precipitous decline in service. “Rapid transit, it ain’t,” said Moore.

Constituents are calling in the news

Somebody had to tell Moore about this, or he wouldn't know. He doesn't take public transportation. He drives downtown. His personal PAC Citizens for Joe Moore picks up his lease, gas, parking, and insurance. Here's some typical charges from his most recent disclosure:

Toyota Financial Services (Carol Stream) $328.00 6/14/2006
CITGO $32.25 6/8/2006
GEICO $242.00 6/2/2006
General Parking (172 W. Madison) $13.20 5/18/2006
CITGO $50.00 5/15/2006
General Parking (172 W. Madison) $17.00 5/11/2006

Campaign Disclosure

T-minus 6 weeks and Moore notices Red Line service sucks, issues a press release and O'Neil runs it. Some of us noticed this a while back.

> I didn't get the impression that the Tattler had a political agenda

running a Moore press release on the front page was not a clue?

Joe Moore is a complete wack job. I hope his ward votes him out. He is just looking for something to get publicity for. He should concentrate on his whole ward first. Yes the CTA has issue so don't blog back telling me about that. One thing that slows down the trains is the security checks where they don't even do anything but walk by. I don't even see them looking in half the time.

NSH,
I think a big part of the complaints are about how little they've done to improve or expand service yet they're about to spend a jillion dollars on a "Super Station" that's going to do nothing to improve the daily experience of actual Chicagoans.

What I find amazing about this were the nice comments our mayor had for Frankie, and the way the mayor seemed to shrug off the problems at the CTA, at least according to the ST and Trib. What does Frankie have on Daley? I don't get it. I can't imagine Daley would let the CTA decay even more, but I'm still waiting for him to acknowledge what daily riders and much of the press (even Crain's for godsakes) already know: Chicago mass transit is in serious trouble.

I agree: Infrastructure needs to be fixed. Yet, the CTA has shown over and over again it is mis-managed, and 2006 was easily the worst year from public transit in the decade or so I've been in Chicago. If you were a lawmaker, would you keep giving over cash to such a bumbling agency?

Kevin,
I live off 103rd st
I take the 103rd st bus eastbound to the 95th st depot. The bus ride is about 15 min, and train is usually waiting for me at the red line.

The south side expansion has less to do with kreusi and more to do with union lobbies on behalf of Metra. Metra does not want the CTA invading it's "turf" since they were there first they think they get the riders.

The red line was actually supposed to run to blue island via I-57 the plan was on the table, the land was available, then the railroad union cried as adding service to blue Island would have siphoned riders from the Rock Island and IC line

The foregoing delays to run the line east is being met with resistance since electric service to the east side is available.

Further expansion of the red line anywhere south is probably never going to happen since metra has been funded for a new "South East Service line"

Broken Heart: I didn't get the impression that the Tattler had a political agenda, or was providing commentary. People come *here* for that ;) Certainly this is a hack job by Moore at his cynical best. I guess he's figuring out that the working poor in his ward don't care about foie gras as much as they care about getting to their shitty jobs on time.

NSH: I don't think that Joe Moore is holding hearing to dig on Kruesi becuase he is "IN THE MIDDLE OF FIXING THE PROBLEM". In fact, the agency *isn't* fixing the problem, and that's what's wrong. You say you live on the south side. It's impossible to take the Red Line anywhere if you live south of 35th, becuase it's in the middle of the Dan Ryan, and walking to the train station adds 20 minutes to your commute. And train service on the south side? Forget it. There are 3 times fewer stops down there, and none of the rail lines run all the way through the south side of the city. Going to visit my grandma is such a hassle, I just catch a ride with my sister when she is heading back south.

The real problem is that the city wants to dump literally millions of dollars into building the Circle Line, rather than run the red line all the way south, which has been funded, studied, and ready to since the 1960's. I don't understand why Skokie get's it's own dedicated rail line, but Harvey doesn't.

m I live on the south side, population density is a lot lower here so when I ride the CTA it's usually on time and fast. However I understand where the northside is coming from.

However
Joe Moore pisses and moans about the CTA delays and track failures and equipment problems. get this... WHILE THEY ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF FIXING THE PROBLEM.

The CTA does what they are supposed to do (replace deteriorating infrastructure) and Joe Moore calls for their heads on plate. Am I reading this wrong?
The Dan Ryan capacity was cut in half starting last summer. No one called for the heads of IDOT for "gasp!" repairing an outdated highway.

Hi Kevin,

This makes up for the "angry blogger" comment you labeled me earlier this month. Seriously, thanks for shedding light on the 49th ward Alderman.

FYI: Did you know Kevin O'Neil (CTA Tattler blogmaster) sits on numerous 49th ward neighborhood boards for Alderman Moore? Boards such as DevCorp North, the Zoning Commission and the CAPS facilitator program.

With Kevin being the Alderman's 'rubber stamp' on community issues, I'm guessing the Alderman feed Kevin a bone to make him feel special in scooping the other media out-lets.

Kevin's happy now and will go all out to get his buddy Joe re-elected -

Joe's happy because Kevin's stupid enough to believe this 'where-as' is going to make a difference-

and the residents of the 49th ward suffer with gangs running amuck, slumlords destroying the name of safe housing of all-

and developers who funnel loads of campaign cash to Alderman Moore in favor a zoning changes that wreck the character of Rogers Park.

OK, I guess I am angry.

I found this on a blog I read (neighborsproject.blogspot.com) and sent a message:

Text your name to cta[your zip code]@npjt.org

This will automatically send an e-mail on your behalf to your elected representatives (mayor, alderman and state representatives) asking them to make improving the CTA their priority.

Example: text “Jane Train” to cta60647@npjt.org

You can also send a message through their Web site at neighborsproject.org.

Jack - Hee hee!

I wrote to both aldermen to commend them on trying to help us poor CTA commuters. Despite what they may have done, or not done, in the past, this is good for the city, and I commend them for stepping up to the plate. I suggested that their resolution didn't go far enough, though, because it didn't ask the CTA to pony up some solutions to the delays. There are some, including a temporary return to the A/B stops that used to be the norm on the Red Line.

BTW, I don't think the foie gras ban was a bad thing, just very limited in its effect. Animal torture deserves our condemnation.
