Blue Moon Making Comeback, Perplexing Diners

By Laura Oppenheimer in Food on Jan 22, 2007 3:30PM

We had a Blue Moon milkshake a couple of years and were completely perplexed by the flavor. Was it some sort of blue raspberry concoction? 2007_1_bluemoon.jpg A white chocolate-based ice cream with blue coloring? We couldn't figure it out, so we decided the flavor was decidedly "blue" in taste, and left it at that. While we knew it reminded us of something, we couldn't quite put our finger on it until reading someone else's description of its flavor as "like the milk after a bowl of Froot Loops."

As it turns out, Blue Moon is seeing something of a resurgence these days. Chicago-based Edgar A. Weber & Co. now owns the trademarked recipe for Blue Moon, and they aren't talking about what goes into the famous flavor (which is only available in the northern Midwest.) Here is the weird part: though Weber & Co. won't reveal what goes into Blue Moon — which is rumored to contain everything from pineapple to Blue Curacao — they said that "a colorless version is used in medicines and beverages to mask bitter flavors." Delicious.

Have you ever eaten Blue Moon ice cream? What do you think goes into this fruity flavor?
