Aqua Teen Hunger Force Flips off Chicago

2007_01_chicagoathf.jpg

Oh those crazy marketers, what will they think of next? First causing a ruckus in Boston, where they were thought to be some sort of terrorist ploy, the LCD packages turned out to be nothing more than an "ingenious" marketing ploy by Adult Swim's Aqua Teen Hunger Force. And now, of course, they are causing a smaller ruckus in Chicago.

In a press conference today at Navy Pier, Police Superintendent Philip Cline said the devices could have created "chaos" had they been discovered during this weekend's Super Bowl festivities. But as you can see, they didn't, since they were picked up by the police after the whole mess in Boston. It seems to Chicagoist that the marketers did a crappy job in Chicago; unlike those attached to bridges and other high visibility areas in Beantown, none of the packages were spotted here. The LCDs, which featured "Mooninites" from ATHF, were also in place in New York; Los Angeles; Atlanta; Seattle; Portland, Ore.; Austin, Texas; San Francisco; and Philadelphia.

I cannot believe the climate of fear in this country. The board looks like a LITE BRITE for folk's sake! How could anyone be paranoid enough to think of it as something bomb-like? You don't see Chicago's Finest shutting down the 'jumbotron' at Diversey/Clark/Broadway 'cause it might an explosive device.

here's a youtube clip of the press conf with guys behind it.. their lawyers told them not to talk about it so they spoke about their hair.

I saw at least two of these over the past week, though for the life of me, I can't remember where.

One was on an overpass in the upper right corner, possibly on the Kennedy.

Other was on the Blue Line, I think the Western stop crossover?

I'd be curious to see a list of where they were...

I'm more pissed that the cops picked 'em all up. I was planning on going on a scavenger hunt tonight to find the Chicago based ones. That's one hell of a souvenir.

There are already commemorative t-shirts on ebay. I want one.

Dear Chicago Police,
Can I have one?

Where's the outrage at that character with his middle finger raised? Are we trying to send a message to our youth that it's ok to flip the bird? This is WAY more upseting than Tinky-Winky's handbag.

My god, we have become a paronoid country. Wait until the next terrorist attack--things will get really ugly then.

America home of the brave? More like home of the scared.

I can't believe they arrested these people and are making so much out of it. What a crazy country we live in. They don't look like bombs or bomblike to me. It was like they duct taped a bunch of flairs together.

Is it just me, or does anyone else find it hilarious that the marketing effort for a show about a talking shake, box of fries and meatball has brought a major city to its knees?

jeremy: Don't you wish you had taken one of the ones you saw last week????

Kevin: Apparently the scourge of the 78th most popular baby's name is striking me, as this Jeremy, the one who wanted to take one home, is not the same as the Jeremy who actually saw one.

I hope they can see this because I'm doing it as hard as I possibly can.

"I hope they can see this because I'm doing it as hard as I possibly can."

Kevin, are you confusing Chicagoist.com with the set of your porn film again?

Actually that's the line that ignignokt said while he was flipping the bird. Use the Quad-Glacier on him for not getting that.

That's Laser... Quad Laser, Tayl-Err.

Chalk one up for Osama Bin-Laden!
Terrorists win again.
Freakin American pussies scared of a Lite-Brite.
Boo!

And, Pez, the finger is for any idiot that believed that was a bomb.

Using a key to gouge expletives on another's vehicle is a sign of trust and friendship.

My problem with the whole thing has more to do with large corporations (the Cartoon Network is part of Turner, which is part of AOL/Warner), making up their own rules. This reminds me a bit of the problems last year with Sony when they sent out people to graffiti buildings (without permission of the owners) with a marketing campaign of theirs. Corporately sanctioned vandalism. Nice. And who foots the bill for cleaning it up?

In this case, I find it hard to believe that leaving ANY type of electronic device on underpasses or bridges, again without permission and surely illegal, was cleared by the legal department of the world’s largest entertainment corporation. And again, who was going to pay for cleaning up the Lite-Brites left behind when the promotion was over?

Yes, we live in a culture of fear, but we also live in a place where mega-corporations don’t give a crap about public or private property. Anyplace is fair game for them to slap their ads.

Ignignokt and Err would be so proud of all the havoc they have created. I love the cartoon, and heard the movie is "meh," but I will gladly fork over my $10 to make it a blockbuster.

Well 'the terrorists' certainly know now that if they want to glue an old clock radio to a wall and bring a city to its knees beantown's the place to go.

I saw one on the brown line beam over lincoln by the western stop. I didn't figure out what it was till I heard about this. It seems like a huge uproar about something silly...

RS: Wise comment indeed.

i dont see what the big deal is....and to RS who seem to hate big corporations...do you ever get angry when you see those missing pet signs stapled to every tree in your block? Its a marketing ploy that had some unfortunate results in boston. i'm sure turner will pay a lot of money for what they did but i bet you that the publicity that the cartoon got is way more than what they will pay in fines.
