Back in the late-1980's, Spy Magazine pretty much invented and perfected the sort of pseudo-literary snarking that pervades our popular culture these days. It went under in the early 90's and then was briefly resurrected in an extremely lame and watered down form, but the issues from the "classic" period are definitely worth tracking down at your local library or on Ebay.

Dear Chuck: First off, thanks for taking the time to check out the Food Chain. I'm curious, though, as to where you're getting this vibe: "Overall, like the rest of the Reader's blogs, there's a sense that, now that the professionals have jumped in the pool, the rest of blogdom should be relegated to the shallow end."
