The Jig Is Up for The Redwalls

Poor widdle Redwalls.

2007_02_redwalls.jpgTime Out has reported that The Redwalls have been dropped from their major-label deal and are now homeless urchins dusting about in the musical wasteland. It's funny, because we were just talking to a friend of the band about their forthcoming new album. We were arguing that the band has never moved beyond its roots as a Beatles cover band, but our friend insisted the new disc was great and could very well move us to accept the band as something new.

So I guess we're just going to have to wait for Undertow to take pity on the poor boys and pick 'em back up, huh? Our question is, who will pay for the hair products and tight trousers until then?

Our follow up? How long do we have to wait until we enjoy the sight of Kill Hannah cozying up alongside The Redwalls in the back alleys of unsigned mediocre recording artists? Let the death watch begin!

I love you.

Even though I'm not a fan of the band, that's too bad for them. Seems like they have been working pretty hard to get somewhere. Then it's back to not having a home. Question is, what will WXRT do now with no darlings to promote?

Maybe it was their stupid hairdos.

Good riddance. Poseurs...

it was a nice kitsch factor to get them noticed (even their fake liverpoolian accents that occasionally slipped out)

but, um, get past that boys. Admiring is one thing, emulating is another. it's called...cover band.

They're growing up. The novelty wore out.

Hey Tankboy - you sound a little bitter. Writing things like "poor widdle redwalls" leads me to believe you have a little grudge going. A chip on your shoulder perhaps.

I'm assuming that your slams are intended for the Redwalls directly but I have to wonder if your bit about "homeless urchins dusting about in the musical wasteland" refers to all unsigned bands. Of course it doesn't...that would be a pretty harsh (and stupid) thing to say. Silly me. It really does read that way though but hey...you never claimed to be a major writer. It's not like you write for Spin or Rolling Stone or a major publication like that. You're more of a homeless urchin dusting about in the journalistic wasteland. That's cool though...the Redwalls can relate.

I know the Redwalls and after reading your piece I was wondering who you are and why this big meanie was so gleefully taking shots at my friends. So, I did a Google search and found 3 other recent articles/blogs of yours that aren't about the Redwalls but mention them anyhow in negative light. Almost obsessive.

The more of your stuff i read, the more at ease I became. When I read your top picks for 2006 on Idolator.com I breathed a sigh of relief. You put My Chemical Romance in the #4 slot for best album of the year and Beyonce's "Get Me Bodied" as your 7th best track. Whew! I figured you were a bitter person with overdramaticly harsh things to say about my friends' band. That seemed pretty clear to me but I was certainly further reassured by getting more context on the taste of the author.

You ask who will pay for the band's hair products and tight trousers until they are picked up by another label. Simply because you're asking, I don't think you'll believe me when I tell you that no one in the band uses hair products so I'm fine to agree to disagree with you on that one. I have to insist, though, that tight trousers are no more expensive than non-tight trousers.

Keep up the good work.

Lynn

PS - "Let the death watch begin"?? Wow...sounds like big boy shit, dude.

Lynn: What's worse than some hack music writer is some hack semi-groupie standing up for the honor of a hack band, and picking a fight over freaking album rankings.

Loser.

vise77, I don't think Lynn is a loser, but I think your first point sums up everything pretty perfectly.

The only thing I have to add is that I did at one time enjoy The Redwalls, way back when they were still The Pages and we had to sneak 'em into venues for show. I've even enjoyed a few of their album cuts. But I think my main problem with them has always been their lack of any sort of growth.

user-pic

So if that makes her a loser, what does your comment make you: a person who gets off on repeatedly calling other people names on a website (or writing holier-than-thou letters to the editor)?

The Redwalls are the best new band of this decade, other bands could learn a ton from them. So they have a sound similar to The Beatles........please explain how that is a bad thing. De Nova is one of my favorite albums of all time. I think its a great album and is as good as many of my other favorite bands such as Pearl Jam, Oasis, The Beatles, The Who, Tom Petty, Nirvana, etc. Your talking about how they never got past being a Beatles cover band and havent grown but how many bands with only 2 albums have had tons of growth? Most new music is total crap and The Redwalls are a refreshing change from total corporate nonsense like Fall Out Boy, All American Rejects, Hinder, and Three Days Grace. You clearly know nothing about music, go rub one out while listening to Fall Out Boy, you are not worthy of listening to anything better than that pretentious crap.

Props to Kevin. I agree entirely. I feel like I just wrote that myself. The redwalls are so damn innovative and refreshing. I hate how people want more "originality" in music today, because in truth, there's not much more to be done than to spin off of the good stuff. So these guys sound like Bob Dylan meets the Beatles. So what? It's kick ass music that owns the bar scene and brings back the nostalgia of good old rock and roll. By the way, I hate your fucking alternative artsy bullshit music.
