Ye Olde Record Faire and Other Delights

With Don Imus shooting his mouth off, the same old recycled music, and Clear Channel dictatorially ruling the airwaves, radio is leaving a lot to be desired these days. That's why community stations like WLUW (88.7) are such an oasis in the desert of mainstream radio.

This weekend, WLUW is holding their fifth annual Record Fair & Other Delights at Pulaski Park Fieldhouse. Once again, the fair will showcase vendors from across the Midwest and beyond who will be selling a wide variety of music-related items, including LPs, CDs, 45s, DVDs, posters, ‘zines and crafts. If you grow tired of shopping, there will be plenty of "other delights." Bands including Antelope and Mucca Pazza will perform live*, and there will be DJ sets from Pit Er pat, Thrill Jockey Records*, plus a performance by members of the Janes, Chicago’s Go-Go dance troupe. Food will be available, as well as an opportunity to school your friends in Dance Dance Revolution and Guitar Hero.

Admission to the WLUW Record Fair & Other Delights is $7 each day ($5 with any ad or flyer -- print out this post!). A special $25 pre-admission price gets eager shoppers into the fair from 8-10 AM Saturday, before the official opening. Those paying the pre-admission price will be able to return to the fair all weekend without additional charge.

While WLUW is located on the campus of Loyola University, they rely on listener support and special benefit events for over 95% of their funding. The Record Fair is a fundraiser to help support this year's operating costs. WLUW provides a wide variety of music, news, and issue- and arts-oriented programming that cannot be found anywhere else on the radio; so if you're a regular listener, want to help support independent radio, or even just want to go find some music you won't be able to get anywhere else -- stop by the Record Fair this weekend. You'll be doing everyone a favor.
