70 percent of 20 percent of eligible voters who actually turned out isn't exactly impressive. Still, I agree that there's no way a few independent council members are going to do anything about Daley's agenda, if they are truly independent. What it means more to is ward services controlled by the aldermen themselves.

I don't think the machine is too nervous. Their leader pulled in over 70 percent of the vote despite going against labor, and anyone who beats a machine backed incumbent will soon become one themselves. In the 35th, Colom was the machine candidate in 2003, and now Colon is.
