Good to Eat and for the Planet Too

Do you remember when Olestra came out? And how it was going to make snacking guilt-free, since it replaced the fat in your favorite snacking products? We do. And we also remember how we decided that the guilt was better than the nasty side effects from eating those potato chips.

Thanks to The Bleeding Heart Bakery, now we can snack guilt-free once again, since everything in the bakery in 100% certified organic. Not only is it certified organic, but it is the only bakery in the country to be designated as such. The certification was done by the Indiana Certified Organic organization, which works with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. "Basically, the ICO wanted to know everything we have in our pantry, dry storage and cooler," Bleeding Heart co-owner Michelle Garcia told the Sun-Times. "If the ICO says it's organic-certified, it's organic through and through."

Chicagoist congratulates Bleeding Heart Bakery on this awesome achievement. They've been a mainstay at the Green City Markets, and their products are delicious to boot. We just can't wait until Crust opens, and we can go there for some organic pizza and then head down Hoyne to Bleeding Heart to complete our guilt-free, Al Gore-approved meal.

It is often believed that something that is organic is some how better for you. This is misleading. I might be better for the environment or contain less cancer causing toxins, but a doughnut is a doughnut organic or not. Don't get me wrong I'm no health-nut, and I agree organic is the way to go, but it won't save your arteries or keep off the pounds any better than any non-organic alternative.

Brad - I totally agree. I meant guilt-free in that I didn't have to feel guilty about killing the environment. I'm pretty sure all delicious cupcakes are bad for your arteries, regardless of where the ingredients come from.

i agree with brad. organic doesn't mean low-fat. and i know vegans and 'organic' nuts who have gone to fat on fries alone.

w00t for BHB. Next, can they conform to the 100 Mile Diet? Local is the new organic...

I can vouch for Bleeding Heart Bakery and its proprietor, Michelle Garcia, as being an extraordinary little place with a large mission. The pastries are excellent, and she even does custom orders for cakes. For our wedding last year, Michelle designed an egg-less cake to our specifications and included chocolate ganache with fruit flavoring. Not many bakeries, particularly those attempting to cater to weddings and special occasions, can boast that their ingredients are organic or attempt to assuage vegetarians.

I don't understand Brad. You say that organic products might contain less cancer causing toxins yet you still wonder if its better for you? Am I missing something?

Too bad Bleeding Heart isn't that good. Hibiscus pancakes?

Oh I'm so there! Thanks for the heads up.
