Baby-on-Board Review: Scooter's Frozen Custard

They say that the best things in life are free. Now you can count among those the complimentary toddler and dog cones at delicious Scooter’s Frozen Custard in Lakeview.

A deal isn’t the only reason you should visit this one-of-a-kind ice cream joint on Belmont. Their frozen custard, made daily, is smoother, richer and frankly, tastier than traditional ice cream. Although we’ve had similar types of custard in St. Louis, Scooter’s website boasts that this is the only place in Chicago where you can indulge.

Scooter%27s.jpgAlong with the traditional chocolate and vanilla, they create one new flavor each day; Kahlua and Cinnamon have been recent choices. Their list of mix-in custard creations like peanut butter-and-jelly in vanilla and the Elvis (you guessed it — bananas and peanut butter in vanilla) runs all the way down their wall. We’re fans of their easy-to-drink shakes (no spoons needed here … we’re lookin’ at you, Frosty), a must since at least one of our hands is always tending to our kid. We love their chocolate and peanut butter blend, just the right amounts of each, and their mocha shake is one of the best in the city. We can’t wait until our kid is old enough to try “Worms in Dirt,” vanilla custard with Oreo cookies and gummy worms. They also offer ice cream pies and make-your-own sundae kits for your kid’s birthday party, making you the most popular parent on the block.

Scooter’s has a stroll-through window, which is essential when we’re visiting with our baby and our dogs. The place is jam packed on warm weekends; behind the counter, there's a room with tables that’s often overlooked and a perfect place to unload with your kids. Too bad we didn’t discover this place when we were pregnant; Scooter’s is the answer for all your ice cream cravings!

Get Scooter’s at 1658 W. Belmont. They’re closed Mondays until Memorial Day. Hours are Tuesdays-Saturdays: 2 p.m. - 10 p.m., Sundays: 2 p.m. - 9 p.m. Give them a call at 773-244-6415.

Agreed, it's very good stuff!

This place is the shit, although I wish they opened earlier.

This place is definitely good, but the best frozen custard in the country can be found in Milwaukee at Kopps.

Mmm... I wonder if I could do a gastronomical tour of the US, like other people do all the major ballparks. Yum.

I disagree. Randy's Frozen Custard in Osage Beach, Mo., takes the cake.

@Jeff:

Is that the place that has those "concretes" the girls suspend upside down before the hand it to you?

I heard that place was the bomb.

@thundercougarfalconbird

I believe you're thinking of Ted Drewes in St. Louis. Their Concretes were the inspiration for Dairy Queen's Blizzards.

What about Milwaukee custard you Mark Buerhle loving hicks?

Scooter's is awesome. However, be warned: One year for Thanksgiving, we got a Scooter's pumpkin custard pie — it was horrible.

Free toddler cones? I'm gonna go to the park and grab me a bunch of kids right now!

Ted Drewes may be home to the concrete, but it still can't stand up to the "Ozark Turtle" from Randy's.

This place is so good, I think I could have my mail forwarded there. Seriously, I'm there way too often.

Sorry folks, this place can't hold a candle to Ted Drewes or Kopps. It's fine custard, but nothing you can't get at a bunch of other places, even around Chicago.

I love Scooter's! Haven't tasted anything better in Chicago... and this is "Chicago"ist, right? After reading all the comments about places in St. Louis & Milwaukee it was hard to tell. I'm sure they're great, but Scooter's is great stuff right here in town. If there are other Chicago frozen custard places that are as good or better, please share!

oh, frozen custard. yum. i'm from wisconsin, and i love the stuff. love to hear kopps name checked. culvers is pretty good for a chain, too.

i still haven't been to scooters. don't know what my problem is.
