One million dollars doesn’t seem like a lot when Dr. Evil is extorting the world, but a million can go a long way towards the Old Town School of Folk Music’s new education center. Stepping in with the school’s largest gift in its half century existence are Gary and Laura Maurer.
The new building that this donation is designated for will be across from the Lincoln Square location where we’re used to seeing the Robbie Fulk’s Secret Country shows. The new center will allow the Old Town School to serve up to 10,000 more students. That’s a lot of people taking the organization’s philosophy that music is for everyone to heart.
This year marks the Old Town School of Folk Music’s 50th birthday and the Maurers will present their big check in December as part of the anniversary celebrations. Only $12.5 million more to go! Become a member, take a class, see a show, or just donate to a place that truly fosters a creative community.

I have a friend who teaches there who refers to the Old School of Folk Music as the Musicians Welfare Network.
Can Chicagoist shed any more light on this new building?
To be honest, the mention in the ST is the first I've seen anything about the new education center. I'm guessing that more will be forthcoming (perhaps in conjunction with the Dec. 1 date given for the 1st installment of the $1M gift) - nothing on their website, nor other articles.
Once I went out with a women who "taught" there.
I discovered that she didn't shave her legs nor did she believe in shaving her legs.
It was our first and last date.
