In October Chicagoist wrote that we were excited that the logo designed by VSA Partners for the Chicago 2016 Olympic bid turned out so well. Sadly, that logo and anything with the logo on it, (including this post) will likely become collector's editions as the International Olympic Committee has ruled against Olympic hopeful cities from using the torch likeness.
The IOC rules state that a logo "shall not contain the Olympic symbol, the Olympic motto, the Olympic flag, any other Olympic-related imagery (e.g., flame, torch, medal, etc.), slogan, designation or other indicia or the distorted version thereof or a design confusingly similar thereto.''
The Chicago 2016 organization is currently working to develop a new logo that fits within the IOC's guidelines. Chicagoist is disappointed as we grew to like the logo but are surprised this was not thought of earlier, doh!

I like this logo a lot, but perhaps it would work just as well if the torch handle were a cigar. After all, the deals for this Olympics bid were made in a smoke-filled room...
figures.
i knew that logo was too good to be true.
This is Daley's fault too
It's the fault of the person who outsourced the design work to Asia.
That sucks...i really liked this logo.
Yeah, who would think to check the guidelines before designing a logo?
So, which one of Daley's relatives owns VSA Partners?
Chicagoist should sponsor an Official Chicago Olympic Logo Contest with "Chicago Olympic-related imagery" (e.g., fat suburbanites, Government corruption,wretched/hated poor people
crumbling/dangerous schools for black and brown children, let them eat cake or dumb, death and blind mentality of Lincoln Parkers and Gold Coasters, etc, dumb Red( Stupid)Eye Readers who hold "important" down town jobs yet read the read eye
flame, torch, medal, etc.),
Based on the wording, Olympic "hopeful" cities can't use a torch in their logo design.
If Chicago does get the bid, doesn't that mean the logo could then be resurrected for the actual Olympiad? Atlanta's '96 logo definitely uses a torch motif.
They just got a little ahead of themselves.
Oh, and spook, don't forget suburban kids who pretend to be black, right "Ethan"?
The logo can come back if we get into the finals.
Just for the record VSA in not owned by a Daley or relatives. It's a major firm here with some blue chip clients.
But go ahead and blame Daley it's all his fault and so is the pot hole on my street.
Daley also gave me Hepatitis C.
So... that's out there.
And it wasn't a dingo that ate that baby - it was Daley.
Ferdy- The logo wasn't outsourced to China, it was the animations that the city used to show what the Olympic Village and the temporary stadium would look like that were done in China. Yes, that was obnoxious and wrong, but it has nothing to do with the logo...
So let me get this straight. A city's Olympic logo is forbidden from having anything to do with the Olympics? Gotcha.
Chicagoist is disappointed as we grew to like the logo but are surprised this was not thought of earlier, doh!
Don't you mean, "D'oh!"?
Seriously though, the fact the city didn't think of it earlier is indicative of their "full speed ahead and damn the consequences" approach to this whole Olympic fiasco in the making.

Relax. It's just a logo (and a damn good one at that). And "full speed ahead and damn the consequences?" Uhm...we're talking about an event that is 9 years away here, right?
Hey Blunderpegiondairyqueeintomahawk,
you’re funny, all “in touch” with a “native” sense of stupidity!
Is there a link to a story stating that this is true? I'm not doubting the veracity of the story, but a link to some details would be nice.
Look, spook, just because we found your poseur ass out (Exit? Really? Was Coyote Ugly full?) doesn't mean you get to be mad at me.
Anyway, Daley and the FBI better stop raping my wife. I'm serious this time.
Jeff - Here is a link to another source to support the story. I will add a link in the article shortly:

Spook is a wigger!!
for the Record the logo was designed for free by the company that designed it.
So Daley accepts another freebie.
I like the logo, but my inner nerd always makes me think that Barad Dur is trying to host the next Olympiad because of it.
+1 to McClure for making me google Barad Dur.
I heard the other finalists were Azeroth and Coruscant.
Yeah... not sure how Landor got away with using the rings in the Atlanta 1996 logo. Maybe since it was the Centennial games the IOC was more flexible? It's a shame. It was a nice symbol for Chicago and the games.
Honestly gang, I wasn't a huge fan of the logo the IOC bonged. Compared to a long list of pretty slick logos for the Summer Games, I have to agree with the IOC on this one. I suppose it's only fair to VSA Partners that I submit my own concept for criticism huh? Well, here ya go... 1 concept, 2 versions:

The Chicago Flame! Duh. Chicago was on fire. It is a great symbol of the human spirit over disaster in the heartland. The fire couldn't take away the spirit but a bunch of snobs froma another country managed to do what the fire could not. It is sad, really. So, the the committee has control of everything that has to do with fire. Atlanta and Barcelona had stoopid pets and we had something classy. Does the committee intend for the symbol to be idiotic?
The better choice for an Olympic Logo would be to make an image of the skyline as it might appear in 2016. What do they want Chicago to be in 2016? Make that the target image.
