Pit Bulls have no place in a big city. Most people in my neighborhood that I see with pit bulls are losers who think having one makes them tough. It doesn't - it just makes them look like losers with an ugly dog.
It's commonly known in the animal community that Pit Bulls, much like German Shepherds, Dobermans, etc., are only violent if they are trained to be that way. Whether or not you think the dog is ugly, it's no reason to say they shouldn't be allowed. It's like animal genocide.
The City of Chicago has a special task force that's been cracking down on animal fighting and using dogs, especially Pit Bulls, as weapons, and I believe we'll see fewer attacks like this one as time goes on.
My heart goes out to the attacked woman, though, and I hope she makes a speedy recovery.
yeah, i don't think they should be eliminated carte blanche. but i can't lie and say they don't scare me when i see one. however, i don't like when anything is proposed that starts eliminating things by way of sweeping generalization.
i do remember that as a kid, it was german shepherds that were super scary, then it was dobermans, then rottweilers. so, it's all a matter of what is perceived as threatening. but again, i can't lie and say that i'm not nervous around a pit.
I rescued a pit mix from the animal shelter. From growing up around dogs all my life I can say with absolute honesty that this dog is the nicest, sweetest dog to both humans and animals. Can't say that for my friend's little yorkie that has bit me numerous times. Yes, I get the argument that a pit bull will do much more damage than a yorkie but it all comes back to ownership and the individual dog. Just like you can't make sweeping generalizations about different races you can't about breeds. But go ahead and hate on the pits all you want--makes me feel all the more safe being a single female living alone living with a dog that gets such a bad, but false rap.
I also rescued a Pit Bull from our local animal shelter. Being a small female, many of my friends and family were very surprised and nervous when my husband and I adopted her. She is by far the sweetest dog ever! I too grew up with many dogs, your typical family dogs...black labs and cocker spaniels and she is by far the best behaved and easiest to train. Once my friends and family had the opportunity to meet her, they fell in love! Pit Bulls really are an amazing breed of dog and after doing much research you'll learn that human aggression isn't a trait of the breed. You would also find that they have a more stable personality than most breeds, according to the American Canine Temperament Testing Association, Pit Bulls had a passing rate that was the fourth highest of 122 breeds tested. It's very unfortunate that they have received such a bad rap!
