An Announcement from your Friends at Chicagoist: Comments 2.0

2007_6_kitten.jpgHey everyone -- you may have noticed that we've made a few small changes to our commenting and feedback systems:

1. Commenters now have profile pages with a bit of information about them, and links to their recent comments, along with comments other people have left in response. If the commenter is also a Chicagoist author, the page will include a list of their recent posts. Here's mine. You can register here -- it's fast and painless, but does require a valid email address for confirmation. Login or out using the link at the top left of any Chicagoist page.

2. Anonymous commenting is still allowed, but anonymous commenters can no longer make up clever names and fake email addresses (oh Mr. FukcYou@FukcYou.com, how we'll miss you!) If you wish to leave anonymous comments, simply log in as Guest (password, Guest), and fire away. And remember: you don't have to register with your real name! So even if you do register, you can still protect your privacy.

We've made these changes because the old comment system was constantly getting snarled with spam, and we wanted to give our readers a personal page here on the site. A number of other features based on the new profile system are coming soon-- expect them in the next couple of months. We appreciate your constructive feedback on the new system-- please note that it's a work in process, and the experience may be sub-optimal for a few days while we work out the kinks.

We put a picture of a kitten on this page because it sort of looks like the kitten is saying something, and this post is about commenting. Also, we read somewhere that cute animals discourage people from being mean -- so we expect nothing but positive reactions to this post.

I commented first using the new system. I win an all expense paid trip to Hot Dougs, right?

That kitten, bizarre yet still adorable, made me smile. Thanks!

I tried out that link for TypeKey users to "reclaim your old comments with the new profile system", but it didn't work. Just FYI.

my profile keeps showing up under gothamist. i have no idea why. i just followed the instructions!

michael: this whole thing originated out of gothamist; they're the back end to the comments. everything should be all right.

Seventh. Do I win anything?

Can we consider this comment thread an official Flickr meetup?

Keep your evil kitten. Volo anaticulam cumminosam meam!

I like the new system. Now if you would only get rid of those fucking American Apparel ads.

Am I the only one who thinks that kitten looks tres creepy?

user-pic

does this mean I can post links now?

I was getting ready to get all angry about this, but since everyone else seems to be okay with it, so am I! I am the highly suggestible type...

Unfortunately, this system is still riddled with errors. I'm unable to transfer my TypeKey info. Your templates keep throwing up errors and say that I should click on the link in an email message that never arrives.

So nice of you to tell everyone about the change 24 hours after you implemented the change!

bah! I will never surrender! Guest forevah!

#18, we've been notified of some of the TypeKey transfer problems and are working on ironing those out as quickly as possible.

#19, sorry, it was a soft roll out so some parts of the site were affected by the change before others.

#20 ... that's your right!

#18 - if you can email me at neil at gothamist dot com, we'd love to help you out. that goes for anyone having typekey reclaiming issues.

thanks!

Cat with a genetically engineered hairlip! That cat is proof positive that breeders don't know what the hell they're doing.
