We complained about the heat yesterday, but we really started bitching when the rain fell. Sure, the rain was over before the Chicagoist offices closed for the day, but the fun was just starting. Chicagoist found three inches of water in our basement and that was after our reroute around multiple streets on the Northside that were either under of foot of water, such as Irving Park Road at the Brown Line, or had broken traffic signals. As we dried our belongings with our neighbors at the laundrymat last night, we swapped tales of inches of water (the highest at the 'mat was nine inches), the last time basements flooded (approximately 18 years ago) and cars trapped under trees (see photo). We haven't felt this neighborly since we dug out of the snow last winter.
So Neighbor, what's your storm story?

you live in flatland that used to be a swamp. walk it off.
I had two inches inside my car, thanks to the great high sidewalk at broadway and barry
Water flooded the streets and sidewalks and into gardens/basements on barry ave between lincoln and southport. I also saw numerous cars stuck in water over door level well into the evening. Took about 3 hours for the water to drain into the storm sewers. I guess we have rainblockers.
I've never had water in my basement before, so it must have been a hard rain. Just a little around the edge of one wall so I'm not that worried.
It rained. It stopped. And I went home.
My car flooded. A day later and after countless calls to insurance, dealership, AAA, and rental car place, I'm going to be out $500 and without the car for who knows how long.
The rain roaring off my roof like a firehose was pretty nifty, though.
