As guests #13 and #14 have already noted, forced registration is typically about making money. It increases the value of site in terms of loyal readership. Just be honest, Chuck, and tell it how it is. This isn't about 'community' and 'not being strangers.' It's about charging advertisers and increasing the value of the site. I love this site, but I don't like to register. Sorry.

They're more interested in looking up your past comments and saying, "See -- you totally sounded like you're willing to buy into every random trend and ridiculous thing in that one comment you left long ago...just like us! Except that we're really, really sensitive about everything hip because we want to be in front of the pack, in a months behind kind of way, but we'll pretend like we're right on top of things anyway, and wonder why you can't appreciate our lack of "getting it", while we tell you we "get it" anyway..", and why aren't you getting it like everybody else? Since we do..

I can't get the TypeKey reclamation thingy to work at all. I've entered username/email, just username, and just email. Each results in a page saying that a reset link will be emailed, but nothing ever arrives. Am I doing something wrong? - bopo

Gee, you Chicagoist folks sure are touchy, aren't you? Since you've already made an ass of yourself, Chuck, I'll complete the circle by assuming this is just a good way to tally unique visitors, better than hit counts. I'm no new economy hipster hoping to be bought out by Google, but I would guess being able to proclaim a certain number of registered users would be a great excuse for charging American Apparel that much more for display ads featuring bad photos of prepubescent girls in skimpy underwear, never mind the annoyance to those users. I'm just tired of giving my name to every random web site on the planet, so I'm not doing it anymore. Create as much community as you want ... I'm happy to be a guest in it.

And for the record, I do want to state that we're not collecting your data so spammers can get to you when you register. If you start receiving European Union lotto award notices, "419" scams, or "get-a-free-iPod" e-mails, it wasn't because of Chicagoist. Cool?

You know what happens when one assumes, right, guest #2? Like I wrote, if you want to keep registering as a guest, that's your right.
