We didn't get a lot of suggestions this go around, which is okay because as soon as we saw Stiff by Mary Roach recommended, we were sold. We remembered seeing it in the bokstore and being grossed out/intrigued by the dead feet and wanting to read it, so we're glad you guys reminded us about it. Hopefully the insides will be as interesting as the outside.
We were very tempted to reread Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, with the fantastic Ralph Steadman cover, but really, we need less reasons to take off on a drug-addled roadtrip, not more.
Read along with us for the month, and hopefully we'll all meet some new, morbid friends.

Friday Afternoon Diversion

I'll confess that my suggestions were pretty lame, but this is the best cover we Chicagoistists could come up with? Really?
excellent choice. gruesome, funny and poignant. and the first "convince us" book that i've actually read beforehand!
Yay! That was my suggestion. I win.
This is one book I have recommended to everyone I know. It's totally fascinating! Wait until you read about what they can use your tissue for!
Awesome book.
Personal pet peeve:
"... but really, we need less reasons to take off on a drug-addled roadtrip ..."
No, you need FEWER reasons.
And I admit, I'm probably the last person in the English-speaking world to care about this.
Its on my list, which means, I should get to it next year, no honestly I might read it earlier :-)
This is one of my favorite books. I tore through it in about a day, it was that fascinating. You really will think about the human body in a much different way.
Sadly, her follow up, Spook, was a terrible let down. It's her "scientific" analysis of possible afterlife/paranormal events, but it was a snooze. I was more disappointed with that book than any other because I had such high expectations for it.
I still love her, though, and I'm eager to see what she comes out with next.
By the way, her follow up book is titled Spook. I wasn't addressing Spook the poster. :)
Loved this book. Literally took it off a friend's bedside table and never returned it.
It was super fascinating, informative, and incredibly funny for a potentially morbid subject.
Reading it again tonight as it is probably on my bedside table...
