Just because a company is corporate owned doesn't mean anything about the quality or service. In my experience this means the staff are better paid and looked after than any mom& pop store thus leading to happier, cleaner service for the customer. Sure Ethel's is owned by mars...Chipotle is owned by McDonalds and those are some good burritos!

I think the concept is cool and I have been to the Armitage and Old Orchard locations, and passed by a few others, but what turns me off is how "chainy" the place feels. I am not opposed to chains per se, but it's too chintzy or something. I agree with the old Chicagoist review linked to this article - it tries to be upscale, but comes off cheap. I think the stand alone stores work the best. However, it's meant to be a mall chain I think. The chocolates are pretty good - I got a sampler and a coffee drink, but nothing spectacular.

I am sure though that it's great for kids. I am sure when I become a mom, I will want to come here for friendly child service.

This place may be good, but it's way overpriced. Ethel's is a chain owned my Mars (same people who make Snickers, M&Ms, etc.) and, other than having a nice atmosphere, is not worth my time.

God, I love this place. If I had money I'd weigh an extra fifty pounds by now from going there too much. Any place that does not serve alcohol and says "Would you like to run a tab?" you're in trouble! Also, anyone who does not think chocolate is a drug should check this place out. They'll give you a little sample just like any good dealer and you are hooked. It's just a good thing we don't have to smoke it.
