Guest #4: Actually I wrote this post on Saturday. It just didn't go live on the site until today. Ebert does have an excellent review (which I should have linked to) but I didn't steal from him. Those are simply facts about the production of the film that are quoted in numerous places.

Charles Burnett wrote and directed the film as his thesis for UCLA. It was shot in 16mm black & white over a series of weekends for less than $10,000 and only sporadically shown afterwards, since music rights for the songs Burnett chose for the soundtrack (including Paul Robeson, Louis Armstrong and Earth, Wind and Fire) were prohibitively expensive.

Nice job paraphrasing from Ebert's review yesterday without attribution.

Oxford American Magazine ran a wonderfully written profile of Burnett and the mystique of Killer of Sheep in its recent Southern Movie Issue. I'll be glad to finally get a chance to watch this film.

Burnett also directed the underrated To Sleep With Anger, which features one of Danny Glover's greatest performances and also worth viewing.
