So we were at Fiesta del Sol the other day, taking photos and soaking in the ado going on around us. For those of you who aren't aware, Fiesta del Sol is an alcohol-free event. That means that you stand a good chance of seeing the stray can of beer or flask of sumthin' stand out among the throngs of stroller-wielding pedestrians (no neighborhood is immune). After a couple hours of negotiating kids hopped on churros and El Campeón virgin piƱa coladas running circles around our feet, we needed a beer. So we headed to Skylark for a nightcap before heading home.
Now Skylark has a pretty good draft beer selection. Among their taps are two outstanding selections from Great Lakes Brewing, Burning River and Holy Moses. This Belgian-style white ale, spiced with orange peel, coriander, and chamomile, makes for a great replacement for those of you in Oberon withdrawal (we're a couple bottles away from joining you). The added spicing to Holy Moses adds a unique dimension to the beer. In particular, the chamomile makes it taste lighter than it actually is, more like a pilsner than a white ale. For us that meant that the only thing food we would pair with Holy Moses was an order of Skylark's popular tater tots, with the three different dipping sauces.
Now that's some eating.
Holy Moses is one of the more accessible beers in the Great Lakes portfolio, and makes for a great summer beer. If you frequent Skylark, or just like some tater tots, do yourself a favor and have a glass of Great Lakes Holy Moses, Chicagoist's "Beer of the Week."

Monday Morning Oprah Diversion

I stongly urge everyone to take a road trip to Cleveland. The dinner and beers at this brewery are worth the trip alone, but if you don't stay drunk on Holy Moses (as I sometimes do in Cleveland), you can also squeeze in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, pig out on cheeses at the Westside Market, climb aboard the USS Cod, and try the home brewed beers at the chophouse while chowing down on Maine Lobster or rack of Lamb!
Nice choice for a Summer beer, and I have had this many times with the sweet tots at Skylark!
There were children in Pilsen?! Shocking!
That brewery puts out some great stuff.
Oh, Oberon! Every time I see that "act like you've never been here before" picture with the guy passed out holding a bottle, I almost cry. I still have two left in my fridge, my friend picked me up two six packs on the way back from MI and I'm trying to make them last all summer. Holy Moses is an adequate substitute.
Starcrunch, you can get endless Oberon in Highland,IN at Liquor Stop. I got there and back in exactly one hour round trip saturday morning!
can thales exoo figure out when, if ever, we will see bell's in chicago again? bell's amber was probably my favorite us beer.
matty: I'll have an update on that in this week's "Friday Buffet." Stay tuned.
