With this weekend's Lollapalooza Music Festival in Chicago's Grant Park and next weekend's Ozzfest coming to Tinley Park, we have to ask ourselves; did Generation X ever grow up?

Before I get into that, let me just say that comparing Ozzfest to the supposedly more hip & "cutting edge" Lollapalooza is like comparing Wal-Mart to Target. (Both are full of crap made in China, except that there is some sort of unwritten dignity about going to Target with the Gen X yuppies that would prefer no one knows of their undercover excursions into the more trailer-trashy Wal-Mart for some cheap barbecue grill.)

Anyway. There is something pathetic about a large portion of a generation that grew up in the 1990's that refuses to grow up.

The Ozzfest-going types have always been around. You know, dope-smoking, beer swilling rock fans that wear Harley t-shirts whether they own a Harley bike or not.

The crazier thing about the 'Lollapalosers' is that its the same 'I refuse to age gracefully' mentality but with money and there is nothing more dangerous than stupid people with money.

Either way, its supposed to be real hot this weekend. At least those jerks that paid around $2,000 for the air-conditioned VIP viewing booths at Lollapalooza won't feel it. The rest of the aging Wicker Park alterna-dorks will be having to tow their kids around (you know, the kids with the 'Punk Lives' t-shirts their parents paid $45 bucks for out of some over-priced yuppie catalog) in the 100 degrees Fahrenheit weather.

Wow. Some retarded rebellion trip they are still on. A corporate sponsored one at that.

It only makes sense that oldsters like Patti Smith, Iggy Pop and of course, the 'Clown Prince of Darkness' himself (Ozzy Osbourne) will still be performing close to 40 years after they launched their rock music careers.

A little bird says G. Love and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, maybe more at the Paste party. I'm not a fan of Love, but wouldn't mind the CYHSY since I've not seen them.

Tuesday may not be long enough to stay away. We were planning on covering every single band, along with interviewing every attendee in the crowd - it could take months before we're done with Lollapalooza coverage. The upside? The person who aces the Lollapalooza Test that we have planned wins a pony.

I heard that a bunch of obscure college-alt-rock bands will put on sub-par performances for a crowd of angst-ridden teenagers as well as a group of late-twenty-something-early-thirty-something trying to recapture their lost youth and prove they are still cool to the aforementioned angst-ridden teenagers!!!!!!
See you there Chicagoist! I'll be the one indifferent to the harsh cold reality of life, while expressing my individuality and lack of superficiality by dressing exactly like everyone else who didn't have a pony growing up.

I've heard rumors, but none from anyone that could substantiate them. If they're right, though, one of the bands is also playing a sold-out show elsewhere this weekend, and the other hasn't had a hit since the '90s, but still maintains a pretty decent touring schedule.

(no, not Pearl Jam. They're at The Vic tonight.)
