BBQ? In Pilsen? This Weekend? I'm There!!

2007_08_honytonkbbq.jpgA few weeks back in one of the "Friday Buffet" installments we wrote about Honky Tonk BBQ, a vendor that's been traveling around the street fair circuit all summer serving up some decent barbecue, but nothing that makes us start searching for superlatives to describe it. We've attributed that to them traveling around, spending full weekends with the same stuff to sell to passers-by who might be more interested in purely bacchanalian pursuits. Our suspicion is that, once they officially open to the public in September, Smoque might be in for some serious competition for the attentions of foodies and BBQ enthusiasts.

We spent some time last Saturday walking around North Halsted Market Days and ran into Willie Wagner and the Honky Tonk BBQ folks, who said that they're hosting a soft preview of their full menu starting today at their home base in Pilsen. We're going to see if our instinct is correct, and if you find yourself down there enjoying some good 'cue, say "hello" or "you suck" or whatever. We'll also have a full review of Honky Tonk BBQ next week.

Where is this place at? There's no storefront out yet, at least not one I could see. I'm also surprised by the location, given that there are many an activist in this area who seem hellbent on preserving the neighborhood's cultural identity. Nonetheless, I am looking forward to its opening. Any word on whether or not they have a liquor license?

I'm a little disapointed in you Chicagoist. The Air and Water show is this weekend and at LEAST double the amount of people will see it than did pitchfork or Lallapalooza, yet you have no acknowledgment of it. I thought your reasoning for covering such events was because 'when that many people are attending something in Chicago' it deserves that much coverage.
WELL?...where are the 10 posts on this??

Their website lists their address as 1213 W. 18th St.

Yes, I realize their website lists the address as 1213 West 18th Street. But I've been by there recently and it doesn't look like much is going on. I thought they'd at least have a storefront???

They got booze or not Chuck Sudo?

Okay okay. There's a temporary sign above the place now. I thought it was a theater when I walked by in recent weeks. They have some sort of poster in two glass cases. Any insight into this Chuck? Did you make it by there last night? Are they going to get windows on the place, other than the two glass block deals? Chuck? Are you out there Chuck?

Thanks for your help Chuck!
