Of course there's middle ground, but this is the Internet. Middle ground isn't nearly as fun as spouting my extreme left/right dogma with little logic or reason, using spurious reasoning and weak connections to complain about something other people see as fun that doesn't really inconvience me nearly as much as I'd like people to think it does. Some folks hate the air show. Some folks hate Lollapalooza. Some folks just hate. It's just another day in the digital world.

first of all ... jets flying in and out of the airport aren't hundreds of feet over the city ... they're *thousands.* i don't mind too much about the noise, but i think there's a middle ground here. there's been times i've gone to the AWS and been amazed at the technology of flight. however, i think we're fooling ourselves if we think it's NOT about recruiting people, since there's *recruiters* everywhere! why wouldn't it be a way to get kids excited about flying ... even though the percentage of people who get to actually fly is like getting into the NBA ... vision, height/weight, physical strength, etc., etc. and it does make me feel sad to know there are all these brave soldiers in iraq losing life and limb for nothing.

Since Guest 2 and Spook apperantly feel there is no need to appreciate the work of military pilots, perhaps they would like to see what would have happened if we had lost World War II. That would definetely have happened if it were not for the great fighter pilots and the excellent training. It would be great if there was some sort of alternate universe we could send these two to see what their lives would have been like under German rule. And I would bet that guest 9 may be worrying about more important things that whether his or her cat is having a good day.

Well, as someone whose hours are not 9-5, I'm sure glad I was woken up by that nonsense every day for almost a week for nuffin'! The jets might be half a mile away for three seconds... but that's three seconds at a time for over an hour, beginning at 9:30 or 10 am for days in a row. Can't sleep (or get back to sleep easily once I've been disturbed for that long), can't concentrate on reading... ugh! Happy it's over! Pristine, sound-free environment this ain't, but frakking jet engines aren't exactly a regular part of living in a city. They "don't add much to it"???? Pshaw. P.S. decibels are measured on a logarithmic scale. 120dB is a lot louder than 90dB...

Meanwhile, the jets are, at best, a half-mile away for maybe three seconds, while the traffic is right next to us constantly. According to a Columbia College study, CTA trains run about 90 db ... and we stand right next to them in a tunnel. My point is that this city is a noisy place, and the jets don't add much to it. Yours is a weak argument you pose simply because you don't like them.

Really, complaining about somebody making noise in a place like this is like complaining that barbecue grills clog up the air in Los Angeles. Uh.. no its not. These jets are around 120db while city traffic is around 50db. You air quality analogy is stupid. Since we don't regulate barbecue grills, maybe we should not regulate power plants! You should get a job as a PR flack for BP.

I guess the noise of the fighter jets drowns out the more pleasant noise of the expressways and street traffic and the horns honking and sirens blaring and music rattling through car stereos and the el train rattle and barking dogs and just the constant rumble that comes with living in a city. If you don't like the show, don't go. Listen, if we are really at war, why in the world are these military units here in Chicago making a hell of a lot of noise in residential neighborhoods (and scaring my cat!) and not fighting the evildoers in Iraq and Afghanistan? If we are to assume that the pilots in the "Golden Knights" and the "Thunderbirds" are elite pilots--it is a colossal waste of time, talent and taxpayer money for them to be flying over Chicago. It is impossible to avoid the pestilence of these damned planes and their CO2 emission levels are outlandish.

I don't see that we have any choice in the matter. I can handle the rest of it, but the fighter jets make so much noise you really can't do anything except hear them. If they'd just dis-invite them, I wouldn't mind the Air and Water Show at all.

Sean Tucker was pretty amazing. I don't know how he was able to do those tricks and pull multiple Gs while narrating his own acrobatics. It made me a bit nervous. Good times.
