- What is wrong with people? Chicago police say a fisherman at Montrose Harbor may have been murdered, simply because he was Asian.
- The South Side is getting their prayer on after last year's tragic incidents of children being caught in the crossfire.
- Jesse Jackson is going around asking parents to send their kids to school. And he's finding it ironic that he has to beg when African-Americans fought to go to school in the past.
- It wouldn't be Chicago if our airports ran well and we didn't have potholes. To accommodate, the busiest runway at Chicago's Midway International Airport will be shut down for about two and a half days next week because of potholes.
- Car makers are still fighting this? Illinois would join California in significantly limiting air pollution from cars under a plan to be recommended to Gov. Rod Blagojevich by a panel of business, labor and environmental leaders.
- Well, of course! We're about to pay more for crap service and the subway project no one really wants is as much as $150 million over budget, a shortfall that has prompted city officials to move to privatize the project. Why is the city involved in this, but not in any other CTA matters?
- Authorities are trying to find out if "speed or alcohol played a part" in a crash that happened where a car careened off the road and hit people waiting to watch fireworks Sunday night in Schaumburg. Seven people were injured and witnesses said the driver was going 100 m.p.h. You think speed or alcohol played a part?

may have been murdered, simply because he was Asian.
From the trib:
"The Saturday morning death of Doan appeared to be the result of a violent outburst and not a crime motivated by hate, said police, who discounted an earlier theory that Doan might have been targeted because of his race."
I knew that Chicagoists editors would cream their jeans at the thought of a real, honest, "get on my soapbox hate crime" but sadly, it is not to be.
Again an anonymous commenter says: CHECK YOUR FACTS Chicagoist!
Guest 1 - FYI, not to be a Chicagoist apologist, (and thankfully the Trib has it's reporting head on right), but a few of other media outlets are still reporting it as a hate crime. I've heard WLS and WBBM still reporting it as such.
In the interview before turning themselves in, the three admitted being skinheads, but not the kind of white supremacists that target minorities and other ethnic groups.
You see? These were good skinheads. It was an accident. This is all a misunderstanding.
Why is the city involved in this, but not in any other CTA matters?
The city is involved because they own the subway tunnels that the CTA operates in. Almost all the improvements made to Red and Blue Line stations are funded by the city along with state and federal money.
Another "Check your facts Chicagoist".
Damn skinhead posers.
Am I the only one standing with Chicagoist on this?? I mean, shit, who doesn't "cream their jeans" at the thought of a boring old murder being labeled a hate crime!? It's what this liberal fucking lives for, man. If I had a tired phrase from the eighties to describe the letdown I feel when something isn't a hate crime, I would surely invoke that phrase here. Guest commenter, you surely must be inside my head you clever bastard.
Pantagrapher:
There are plenty of skinheads that aren't racist, it's just the neo-nazis get all the media attention. Not to say that the rest are all the level-headed...
I agree with #7. A good friend of mine from college was a non-racist skinhead. And he was by no means a poseur either.
And isn't murder by definition a "hate crime"?
captions for photos? I get confused when I read the first news article under the photo. I see a picture of the brown line, and then a news story about Montrose harbor? Please, please, please include captions on photos in the Extra Extra feature. Thank you. (this is from someone who is a graphic designer in the newspaper industry)
"And isn't murder by definition a "hate crime"?"
Yes..which is why the term "hate crime" is utterly stupid. Murder is murder...doesn't really matter if you kill a person because you're a racist, or because you think that person looked at you wrong on the el. A person is STILL DEAD.
Well, of course! We're about to pay more for crap service and the subway project no one really wants is as much as $150 million over budget,
Contractors and cronies of Daley: Dear people of Chicago: Thanks!
GREAT PIC!
hey hate crime haters: often times, if i do the "extra, extra" i incorporate descriptions of the articles that the online newspaper gives them. they're just supposed to be headline links, so i don't get all into it. so, blame the MSM for the 'hate crime' moniker.
caption for the photo ... it's at the bottom of the page with the photo credit. the caption is whatever the person on flickr titles their picture. the photo doesn't necessarily go with any of the headlines; it's a nice way to focus a local photog and end the day.
This is the first time I have ever heard of "non-racist skinheads." One of the skinheads was African American. Boggles my mind. Why would any person who is a minority be associated with a group that is largely believed to be associated with racist beliefs by mainstream society?
How could you not tell that you pushed a person in while running? I think the guy just wanted to push him in, thinking he would putter around a bit, and get back safely to harbor, but got scared after his death, so they came forward with their sob story of "not knowing what happened." OKAAYYY... if you believe in working class values, move to some other racist town. Leave Chicagoans alone.
