Sparkler Update: Oh Blah

Several days ago, we reported that the Aldermen were going to be considering a ban on sparklers in the city. Unfortunately, the Daily Southtown reports that City Council approved Jim Balcer's (11th) revised proposal to get rid of sparklers in the city, and the sparklers are now banned. They didn't even debate.

2007_09sparkler.jpgThe Mayor gave his pearls of wisdom on the topic as well. "Sparklers are completely different now," Daley said. "They've gotten more dangerous, unfortunately. It's the same thing with cherry bombs or M-80s. ... They're getting much bigger. A lot of children have been injured in the past with that." Right. M-80s are so close to sparklers. Gah.

So ... if you're hoping to get down and dirty and have some fun in the city, remember ... no foie gras, no spray paint, and no sparklers. Oh well. We guess that our Sparkly Liver Painting party will have to be rescheduled for somewhere else.
