2007_09_11_boxing.jpgThis fall, Chicago will be the host city of the 2007 AIBA World Boxing Championships. The event, which will feature nearly 700 competitors from more than 120 countries, will be the biggest international sporting event in Chicago since the 1959 Pan American Games.

The event is scheduled to take place at the UIC Pavilion starting October 23 and running through November 3. The AIBA Championships serve as an Olympic qualifying event for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. This event is just another sporting contest brought to Chicago by World Sport Chicago an organization working to demonstrate Chicago's ability to host world class sporting events and drive support for the 2016 Olympic bid.

On Tuesday USG Corporation, a Chicago based Fortune 500 manufacturer of high-performance building systems signed on as sponsor of the event. President and CEO of USG, James S. Metcalf, commented "Chicago is a sports town, and this adds a new dimension to world-class sporting events held here." USG has a history of sponsoring sporting events ranging from the Golden Gloves to NASCAR. Metcalf went on to say, "The values these boxers bring into the ring-like excellence, passion and commitment-are the same values that the 14,000 USG employees bring to work everyday."
